Nothing new, but I'm disappointed.

Many years ago, Linux represented the alternative. The question was: "Why don't you just use Windows? It's easier." And the answer was, almost always: "To be free."

The "bazaar" spirit of Linux and its distributions made us feel free. Personally, I've always thought that the "cathedral" approach of the BSDs produces more reliable and maintainable results. But that feeling of freedom was fantastic.

There wasn't a company deciding everything. There was a kernel developed by people following what they believed was right. Or what the community, in one way or another, was asking for.

Torvalds has always been quite outspoken (remember the middle finger to Nvidia?). But the general spirit was, again, freedom. Anyone, sitting in their bedroom, could contribute in some way. Even me.

Today, after the embrace of AI, I read statements about wanting only "serious" contributors, "serious" contributions, because the world depends on this code and reliability must come first.

I understand the problem. Maintaining the Linux kernel is a huge responsibility. And low-quality contributions, especially those blindly generated with AI, are a real problem.

But what I hear, between the lines, is something like: "Hey, kid in your bedroom. If you don't have the right tools, the money to afford them, or the experience we expect, maybe your contribution isn't even worth considering."

Am I exaggerating? Maybe. But this is what I got from the tone and content of the latest public statements.

And it makes me sad.

Because it feels like a transformation towards what we wanted to escape, back then.

So please don't ask me why the BSD community, imperfect as it is, feels like home to me.

When I see young people, with limited resources, being able to contribute and attend conferences (thanks to the support of the Foundations), and I see the enthusiasm in their eyes, I feel at home.

Because I still remember what it meant to be that kid in a bedroom.

And I really hope we never close the door in their face.

Hi!
I am currently looking for a statistician to join my Biometrics team at Astrum to support / lead P II-IV trials.

As your manager, I am striving to provide a positive work environment („work should not suck!“). I value continuous improvement, constructive approach to mistakes and failure (we are all human, after all!), and you taking ownership of goals while determining the most effective path to achieve them.

Please do reach out to me if these lines have piqued your interest!

let me tell you, the president of the united states and all of his many surrogates attempting to strip me of congressional representation after failing to subjugate me under his fascist paramilitary force sure does make focusing on B2B SaaS difficult

It's also very frustrating to constantly have my opposition to AI be taken as an opposition to abstraction, or to automation, and a desire to do every little thing by hand. But it's the opposite. For a whole bunch of reasons, AI anti-abstracts. It adversarially creates oceans of duplication to process. It creates a situation where the AI user gets to set the terms of some ecosystem with synthetic productivity but then everyone else needs an AI to figure out what's going on in that new ecosystem.

OK humans, here's a question:

Can someone explain how I can get PS2 saves off of a memory card and onto a PC like I'm a newb who's never once opened up her console?

I found 22-year-old save games and I'd like to preserve them for posterity (and emulation), but be able to wipe clean the memory card so my family can play with it.

EDIT: pretty sure I solved it down the thread thanks to some awesome people, I'm using an ISO called FreeDVDBoot which let me boot into a file browser.

If I'm ever king of the world, you'll be allowed to take cold rainy days off of work no questions asked.

I don't normal talk about work stuff on here but in the current climate maybe it'll help somebody out: #getfedihired https://www.jobs.manchester.ac.uk/Job/JobDetail?JobId=46264

I'm looking for some beta testers for WFDIGI, which is a drop-in replacement #APRS digipeater firmware for the AEA PK-88 TNC. Does anyone have a spare PK-88 who would be interested in getting a new ROM to swap in and put on the air as a fill-in digipeater?

I'm hoping for US stations outside the bay area, CA so we can see how it behaves in different parts of the network.

I am a highly experienced software engineer with over 20 years of experience. I've done everything from kernel development to web development and I'm fluent in tens of programming languages and build tools. I am good at just making things better and I come highly recommended by some fedizens.

I urgently need work. Happy to do most things programming, sysadmining or devopsing. I'm located in Europe in the Netherlands, but happy to remote to anywhere. #GetFediHired

As the introvertetest of introverts and no "network" to speak of, I’ll just put it out here: If anyone would like to give me an invite for lobste.rs, I'd appreciate it!
