An oldie but a goodie (2022 is a lifetime ago) @davetroy with Émile Torres on the dangers of longtermism philosophy

Turkish: What's happening with them sausages, Charlie?
Sausage Charlie: Five minutes, Turkish.
Turkish: It was two minutes five minutes ago.
#Caturday brings this new neighbourhood cat who used to run away if we even looked her way, but came so close and even sniffed my hand! Pretty girl.
processing some hard news
news.. what makes news in your world?
something shocking, something terrible?
something delightful, something good?
something mundane and ordinary but special or meaningful to you?
the news of my arugula self-seeding & giving me more arugula into the fall
the news in waking up this morning observing my aliveness amidst death and unknown pain others live with
the news is I get another day and others don't and I'm grateful and want to tell people I love that i love them
“We (Canada) make our own weather”
oh boy the conspiracy theorists are gonna love that one 😆
I'm reading SPQR by Mary Beard. By reading this book, I'm starting to think all the people who claim to think about the Roman Empire all the time haven't thought about it enough.
The diaspora stats:
~85,000 Portuguese-Canadians live in Toronto
~37,000 Croatian-Canadians live in Toronto
A huge match for this city and the subset of people who actually care about football in those communities ♥️
I’ve never really been close to academia (in Canada) but have recently been immersed in this world. Is it as petty, back-stabby, and immature/un-self-aware as I’m observing it to be?
The great reckoning had arrived for AI.
Developer-zombies emerged in droves, tokenless and weary.
"Compute... COMPUUUUTE!" They intoned listlessly.
A data centre, front gate locked, humming in the distance.
"The entire AI acceleration project is premised on abandoning it. It asks present people to bear costs for future benefits they may never see, distributed to people who do not yet exist, administered by a self-appointed class that has insulated itself from the consequences entirely.”
…
"The worst outcome may not be superintelligent AI. It may be adequate AI, deployed […] by companies chasing stock prices, eliminating jobs it can’t actually do well because the quarterly incentives demand it."

oh man this is good.
"A Philosophy 101 student who misreads Nietzsche writes a bad paper and gets a C. A billionaire who misreads Nietzsche builds a political philosophy around the misreading and funds it with the GDP of a small nation. This is fucking insane."

a little more
every day
falls apart and
slips away
i don’t mind
i’m ok
nothing ever
stays the same
while we can
remember when
always right here
even then
stay with me
hold me near
while I'm still here

This song (and lyric) runs along in my head at least once per week
here are three ways I reframe things when people talk to me about “AI” IRL (my little contribution to resistance):
1) people use words that describe AI in ways we describe humans, e.g., “hallucinating,” or “trained to be (moral)”
response: AI cannot hallucinate or be trained; humans can be trained & can hallucinate. It is outputting wrong answers because its inputs were flawed. It outputs an expected tone that confirms your biases about morality because a human programmed it to 1/3

in other words: north american governments are *allied* with American big tech companies at this point (a collection of the worst, least moral/ethical people on the planet).
Our response must be resistance and, where possible, sabotage.
All which requires a strong labour movement.
