Coming Out Day, October 11!, celebrates gender, sexual, and romantic diversity. Hate thrives in ignorance and distance. Living out loud helps those who cannot yet.

I have not attended any other conference 8 times and still loved it.

I joined DemocraticTech.Fund as an annual member after learning about it at @fediforum.

I also added to my annual donation to @iftas.

The challenges with operating community servers are real, hard, and need funding.

When searching for a grim reaper emoji (there is not one yet), I remembered Egyptian Hieroglyphs, the original emoji, have a Unicode block.

Some bangers:
𓂺 𓀬

Geometric beauties:
𓃑 𓎒 𓈗 𓊓 𓋌 𓍰 𓐑 𓐠 𓐬 𓐍 𓏙 𓏗

So many birds:
𓅓 𓅣 𓅚 𓅨 𓅭 𓅬 𓅰

A tree swing? 𓋲

A sickle: 𓌳

Mandy Pipher: If Sverige and the rest of Europe really want to move into a prosperous, sustainable, just future, they would do well to learn from Canada on what it takes to build a multi-ethnic society.

As our ability to shrink transistors reaches a physical limitation of the size of a silicon atom, I wondered what the end of Moore’s Law would mean for future chip performance improvements. People have ideas to 10× usable performance and 20× energy efficiency.

I went down a music rabbithole in Spotify and heard “All You Pretty Things” by Darren Hayes. The lyrics mention people in the past tense, but I did not know the context. I searched and learned that the song was about the 2016 shooting at Pulse Night Club. Genius did not have annotations, so I linked memorials of every victim mentioned in the song.

The last 4 years have been emotional hell for me and immigrant friends in Sverige.

The right-wing "Tidö party" coalition restricted immigration. Academics, entrepreneurs, children of immigrants, a famous drag queen, queers from bad countries have been deported/forced to leave.

Sverige elects its next parliament on Sunday.

The last election put the far-right party—founded by actual neo-Nazis in 1988!—Sverigedemokraterna (SD) into power for the first time when the center-right parties broke a promise to a Holocaust survivor to never work with SD.

Conference panel discussions:
1. Good moderator
2. Good panelists
3. Good duration

Most are a “pick 2” situation.

(Paraphrasing and possibly misremembering a great @johnsheehan tweet)

9 years ago, I joined 150,000 people in buying a pristine parcel of land on the US-Mexico border to stop Donald Trump’s border wall, organized by Cards Against Humanity.

Since then, SpaceX’s company town has been built around it. Last year, "we" sued when SpaceX illegally dumped waste on it.

Now, Cards Against Humanity wants to erect a monument to Elon Musk on the land, as it is on the road to SpaceX’s executive housing. I joined the design committee and you can too!

Last night, I went to The Liffey with my friend Vivien to see Bligh Walter perform.

Me: “Reservation is under Jeremiah Lee.”

Host: [chuckles to himself and pauses] “That’s not a name you hear often.”

Me: “I hear it all the time.”

Host: [confused]

Me: “No, it’s not a common name.”

Host: “Are you Amish?”

Me: “No, my Christian parents just knew I would write lamentations professionally.”

Host: [further confused] “Table 4, this way.”

The opposite of cloud computing is LEAF computing:

Local application logic and data
End-to-end encrypted data
Autonomous operation without non-optional dependencies
Federated capability between devices and connectivity with trusted parties

I’ve read books about the early days of Apple and Silicon Valley—the “change the world” idealism and radicalism, the range of hippies and capitalists directionally agreeing on some things, the wild experimentation with primitives, and the chance social connections that resulted in meaningful collaborations.

I’ve never felt anything like that in my tech career—until I attended #DWebCamp this week.

How is there no container emoji given its ubiquitous presence on sea and land and its use as a foundational metaphor in cloud computing?
