This is one of the scariest moments in computer-touching for me: the first post-update startup. Why are there so many reboots during the process? Will it verify all the code successfully? Or will it get almost to the end before deciding to crap out and go to the recovery boot screen? (This time it completed fine, but I've had enough experience here to instinctively hold my breath the whole time.)
Just received an email from "PayPal" that started with: "Dear Beloved Customer," so I knew it was definitely a scam.
This was fun to see at the Computer History Museum: the "Big Mac", with a normal-sized Mac for scale.

Exhibit A: a page printed on the ImageWriter II from the Service Source stack. Notice the top bar with header and page number are mangled, because the driver included superfluous commands to reverse the feed direction twice. The paper actually rolled backward, then forward again, in the middle of a line.
Exhibit B: same print job, but with the reverse feeds stripped out by Simple Spooler 0.3.

One of those in the "allies" camp was my classmate Chuck. In my memory, he was a skater-dude type of guy, wearing Vans and hanging out and just exuding a chill attitude. I think we rode skateboards or bikes together at some point, but mostly I remember Chuck as someone who accepted me and was a whole lot cooler than I was. Very recently, I unearthed my 7th grade yearbook and found he had written the following message to me. Good to know I was all right and it was "usually" not my fault!

Here's another story. This goes back a long way, to the mid 1970s when I was in junior high school in Southern California. Those almost-teenage years are awkward for everybody, but I was a painfully shy kid and usually preferred the company of books to people. Among my classmates, some were good friends, some were allies but not particularly close, others were neutral, and a few were actively hostile. Those few would pick on me after class, because they could.

One of Bill's colleagues at Harvard, Mark Van Norman, had developed a program called Schema. It let you construct a 3D model in the computer and then view it from any angle, with hidden surface removal. This was a forerunner of the sort of walkthrough software that architects use to show you what a building will look like, but it was cutting-edge back in the 80s. At UCLA, we used it to generate perspective views. My planned thesis project was going to be along these same lines.

In 1986 I was very excited to be at UCLA's Graduate School of Architecture and Urban Planning, because it was incorporating computers into the design process. Visualizing buildings could be done onscreen! And the person primarily responsible for this direction was Bill Mitchell. I wrote the Palladio program for one of his classes. It wasn't sophisticated, but it explored how new designs could be generated by tweaking parameters, and it was one of the first Mac GUI programs I had written.

Back in March, when everyone was excited about old Macintoshes, I mentioned to someone that I had drawn this icon. It's meant to be a likeness of Andrea Palladio, the influential 16th-century Italian architect. Since I didn't have a picture of him at the time, I imagined what a craftsman with a hat and ruffed collar might look like. This became the application icon for "Palladio", a grad school project which started a long journey for me. Here's the story.
Came across this picture of Jim Henson and the Muppets, and noticed two of them in particular. They were noted for their rendition of a particular song. I added the speech bubbles so everyone can hear that song in their heads now.
