Privacy note: While they may appear to be, polls on here are not anonymous under the hood. It's possible to learn who voted how. It's easier for the admin(s) of the instance the poll came from but it can also be possible for regular users under some conditions depending on the software involved. Like most things on the Fediverse, an inherently-public medium, privacy is not absolute.
Given the situation in the US I'm now living in Canada, and I'm looking for a new job as my current one is obviously American. If you are or know a Canadian employer with use for a person in Toronto with a good understanding of SQL databases, Linux administration (mostly Debian but I can do Fedora), HTML-based Web backends, ServiceNow, and Microsoft cloud offerings, plus some networking experience (office networks and outbound-filtering firewalls), technical writing skills, and significant programming experience with Rust, Python, C#, and PowerShell, please get in touch via email or DMs.

@NanoRaptor's story Binary Star and its original inspiration have finally persuaded me that we all need to get over how it sounds silly and get used to saying "gibibyte".
At 0643 hours yesterday morning an unknown contact was detected on air-defense radar for the National Capital Region. Three Air Force interceptors were scrambled to identify and escort the unknown consistent with our mission to maintain the security of American airspace.
At 0659 the interception flight made visual contact and identified the target as an unregistered magical girl. At no point during the incident did the target make or respond to any radio transmissions. While the interception flight was approaching to take the target under escort via visual communication, the magical girl made an unexpected major change in flight path. The flight leader, making a rapid decision under unclear operational conditions, interpreted the maneuver as a shift to an aggressive posture and made the decision to fire on the target at 0703 hours, in violation of the applicable rules of engagement.
After a brief exchange of fire, three F-22 fighter jets were destroyed or seriously damaged. The flight leader and one of his wingmen were able to successfully eject and survived, but one pilot was unfortunately killed in this deeply regrettable incident.
If you were offered rulership of the world, what would you say?
KDE's shake-to-enlarge-mouse-cursor feature did not need to keep making it bigger as long as you keep shaking it with no upper limit. That was not necessary. But it was 100% the right call. Whoever wrote that code: I salute you.
Experts with massive amounts of money on the line agree: If you don't participate in the latest craze, you will lose out on its extremely nebulous benefits.
If I can't figure out how to genericize the name I will often straight-up refuse to order a dish at a restaurant.
never call anything by its marketing name as this gives them power over you
Singletons are just global variables. If using a global variable is a bad idea using a singleton for the same thing is almost certainly also a bad idea. Is this not obvious?
I've pruned some follows/followers from domain fosstodon.org and sent notices to the rest to consider moving elsewhere.
This is due to the recent and long-standing concerns about that instance's moderation, leading to the possibility that it could be blocked by my instance's moderators if recent changes don't sufficiently improve the situation. I have no significant involvement in this decision, but I have confidence in solarpunk.moe's moderation and believe if it is taken it will probably be for the right reasons.
How do you pronounce xargs?
I'm writing an IP implementation with a friend now. There are so many RFCs, but at least I found the RFC that lists the other RFCs.
Attention user interface designers and people who write copy about UI toolkits. I, a user, will never be "delighted" by any user interface. Thank you.
if you're in a position where a government doing terrible things is relying on you to help do them, this is an opportunity.
do NOT quit in protest, do a bad job on purpose.
accidentally forget to make backups of important information.
send back subtly wrong answers to questions.
wrap everything in as much red tape as you can get away with.
you're smart and competent, turn your thinking around: how can I make everyone around me less efficient.
the triad:
want to write an operating system
don't want to write C
don't know any systems language with full dynamic linking support except C
The loss of the precision stylus as standard equipment for touch-screen devices has I think significantly impeded their functionality. Palm's Graffiti was faster than on-screen keyboards, and handwriting recognition technology is significantly better than it was in the 90s – and even then later revisions of the Apple Newton software were reasonably good at it. Plus, quick sketches are an extremely useful form of information.
I imagine you could have a setup where for each device that needs a Linux driver you launch a very small VM with an extremely barebones kernel and a very small initramfs containing the necessary module(s) and firmware and a small /init that just proxies syscalls to the host.
It would probably end up using a lot of memory anyway but maybe samepage merging could reduce that problem.
Microkernel that runs a dozen tiny Linux VMs because it doesn't have any drivers
