Australia used to have lax gun laws. But then in 1996, the mass shooting at Port Arthur - in which 35 people were murdered and 23 wounded - sent such shockwaves through the country that 643,000 weapons were willingly handed over by citizens as part of a "buy-back" scheme initiated by then Prime Minister, John Howard.

Australia now has strict gun control laws, particularly as regards semi-automatic and pump-action firearms.

No other nation on the planet has the USA's problem with mass shooters.

England is a cup of tea.
France, a wheel of ripened brie.
Greece, a short, squat olive tree.
    America is a gun.

Brazil is football on the sand.
    Argentina, Maradona's hand.
    Germany, an oompah band.
    America is a gun.

    Holland is a wooden shoe.
    Hungary, a goulash stew.
    Australia, a kangaroo.
    America is a gun.

    Japan is a thermal spring.
    Scotland is a highland fling.
    Oh, better to be anything
    than America as a gun.

@ApostateEnglishman while I’d love to be proud of my homeland about this, the fact is Howard’s gun laws had far too many loopholes and the moratorium was never enforced.

Unfortunately we now have a higher undocumented gun ownership level than most western nations (excluding the US) and we’ve started having mass shootings again.

We were never a big market for semi-automatic weapons, but our murderers are dab hands with bolt-action rifles and those were never banned and only lightly regulated.
