I first learned it in 1973 as an intern, where it ran the IBM 1800 control system for a giant paper machine at International Paper Co.
Out of school, I landed my first job in 1971 by knowing Fortran II and able to use it on an IBM 1100. Then skipped to DEC PDP’s, DG Nova’s, and HP 1000’s, all running FORTRAN 4, 4x, or 77. At that point in 1984, I switched to C.
Needless to say, FORTRAN was the basis for a long career.
