I think we missed a huge opportunity to normalize masking as a public health tool.

We eradicated an entire strain of the flu with Covid prevention measures.

Masking shows respect for those around you.

It shows solidarity with the disability community.

It shows you value long term health.

We missed a huge opportunity in terms of health.

Several viruses are known to cause cancer.

There are more and more clues that viruses increase the risk of dementia.

Viruses play a role in auto-immune conditions.

Other viruses increase the risk of cardiovascular disease.

Each infection that you prevent you cannot pass on to others.

@broadwaybabyto people went back to just coughing everywhere with out covering their mouth, just cough right in your face...

So i agree, we should have normalized wearing a mask.

I see the Chinese and Japanese people do it...

I justbthink western people are too daft, or too willing to believe complete and utter morons... over actual scientists.

Or they believe some random "doctor" online, or someone who is the lunch lady in the hospital an "doctors told her that masks bla bla bla"

@VerenaRupp no of course not. I would never encourage that! Sorry I assumed since I mentioned eradicating a flu strain it would be clear.
Will try and say “wearing a mask” to avoid any confusion!

@broadwaybabyto Mh, I did register that, but was just overall confused. I was already in the "masking means 'autistic masking'" mindset, and rather confused as to what that has to do with illnesses. There are people who react negatively when an autistic person's mask slips or comes off, therefore, you *could* argue that "masking shows respect for those around you". The rest of the post didn't fit in with that, hence my confusion. I've never heard the term "masking" being used in a different context, we even use that word in German because we don't really have our own terminology for this. I wasn't sure about what it was you were trying to say, which is why I asked - instead of, y'know, laying straight into you for telling autistic folks they can't be who they are ^^

Also, air filtration as a standard for all public buildings.

We stopped cholera by providing clean water.

We can drastically reduce airborne disease with adequate filtration. Why aren't we doing it?

Hi, I'm sitting here at work with a mask on right now. When it was arguably time to stop, I thought, You know what? I do not miss getting colds all the time.

@broadwaybabyto I ask my students to mask in my class and explain why (lots of reasons, but I focus on long covid and asymptomatic cases. I (via department funds) provide them with free masks. Pretty much everyone wears one, and the few that don't day 1 are usually wearing them by week 3. So this is absolutely still possible.
