I almost wound up sinking in quicksand and nearly lost my shoe to it!

I was playing on a big pile of sand in NWI growing up. There were lots of random piles of dirt/sand around from industrial activity in the area.

Anyways, I stepped down, my leg sank like 3 feet, my other leg was sinking, I SLOWLY pulled up my leg, my shoe got left behind, and I had to dig it out.

Quicksand is in fact real.
