I think it's to do with a changing social sphere and political climate, where people can be manipulated. "We'll give x if you vote us. Don't look at history."
Newspapers is likely a dying breed. Investigative journalism is practically a dead art. Because, people don't (rarely) read newspapers. They tik-tok or Twitter. So that's where polis are. If the only place people were was pornhub, that's where polis would be (some are).
It's about power, control, and wealth.
