Thread documenting my latest art project (my second one ever using #airbrush).
I went to a potluck with friends this weekend that had a "Festival of Unusual Shapes" theme. ...

I made meatloaf baked in silicon donut molds:

[bonus fun activity: Are the middle bits pointing up, or down? Concave or convex??] with a savory tomato-based "frosting" on top:

I also had retro diner-style mugs full of brown gravy to "dunk" their meatnuts.

I also decided to create a fun little piece of art using my new - but still very much beginner level - airbrush skills. Here's the end result:

The rest of the thread goes into the process, for those interested...

I found a drawing online that I liked and made a basic concept mock-up:

I originally intended to freehand paint the "Meat" script (because the word "meat" in a graceful flowing script is funny), and cut out the other letters to use as a template for airbrushing them on.
4/
I started by practicing those movements with the airbrush for /two whole months/, covering multiple sheets of cheap 18"x22" art paper on both sides:

Although I did make progress, my lettering wasn't yet at an acceptable level when ...
5/
The original piece was on a 9"x12" sheet of paper. I reduced it and printed copies on 8.5"x11" card stock - the edges of the glued-on bits were invisible, hooray! I trimmed them down to 6"x9" to give one to each of my fellow diners as mementos:

... about a week and a half before the dinner I realized that I also needed to paint the rest of the picture! ( I was able to finish that part within that time, so that worked out.)

Unlike what you can get with a paintbrush, getting sharp edges with an airbrush requires using masking templates. For the hand holding the meatnut I took a big sheet of frisket and cut out the traced hand and donut separately:

7/
After cutting out the two pieces, I stuck the surrounding frisket on the blank painting surface along with the donut cut-out, leaving just the hand area exposed. A few rough passes, with some pencil reference marks showing:

Once the hand was done I covered it to protect from accidental overspray and uncovered the donut part. That went pretty quickly. Once the hand and donut were finished I removed the rest of the frisket, printed out the lettering and glued it around the painted part:

And now...on to the next project! ☺️
