A good part of this work was funded by the GREYC (@gmic's research lab) a few years ago.

This feature is backed by a #WIP repository for third-party makers to publish their work. Server side work was funded through 2 GSoC internships.

All the rest is being funded (still to this day) by our patrons, at #Patreon or #Liberapay, through the LILA non-profit:

Don't forget you can donate too, if you appreciate our work on @GIMP and/or our art work!

If you follow our work, you know we've been working (ON and OFF, for a few years now) on a new packaging format for @GIMP, made to distribute various resources (brush sets, themes, plug-ins…).

We want creators to be able to quickly search, install and uninstall extensions to tweak #GIMP for their specific needs.

Slowly getting back to this project, I just added support of filters and icon themes. The screencast shows how a new filter appears after I enable the "Hello Worlds" extension.

Here is a better quality version of the image digitally painted by Aryeom of #ZeMarmot, with @GIMP, around 2013 (actual creation date unsure; was too long ago!) which @CmykStudent was using in his demo video (https://fosstodon.org/@zemarmot/117400877876836823).

Artwork title: "Apple Cake and Cinnamon Tea"

File retrieved from the web. I wonder if she still has the original file for this.

Ahah fun. Thanks @CmykStudent for doing your demo video using one of Aryeom's (#ZeMarmot film director) artworks!

This still-life painting was digitally painted by her around 2013 (AFAICS) fully in GIMP, and we were both still in the "discovery" phase of @GIMP. She made it in the context of a digital painting contest (which she won) organized by the long gone GIMPusers website.

That was long before she became GIMP's lead designer and us globally its maintainers! 😄

Fun story: I got labelled an "Amish" (more accurately: we got compared to Amish who debate merits of horse carriages 🐴over cars 🚗) yesterday for refusing a genAI patch in a merge request for @GIMP.

It's not like we don't explicitly write in our merge request template that any genAI contribution is refused (code, but also text, images…), and as though we haven't said it explicitly for years now.

Anyway, so now I'm an Amish. It made me laugh. 🤣

Here is what one of our #GSoC intern told us on IRC (voluntarily; this is additional to the nice words all the interns tell us in their "Final Submission" form) at the end of the internship.

As every year, it looks like all our interns are quite happy with the team; and so are we with them! 🤗

New article with video on #Patreon showing how we make our own 3D model of the animated "shooting" location in @Blender as a reference for 2D painting in @GIMP in order to produce a consistent environment and compelling storytelling for #ZeMarmot.

Back from vacation (and after sick days after it! 🤒), we are back at:

1/ Working on #ZeMarmot production;
2/ Working on the next generation of file format for #GIMP (which will bring all kind of fancy features).

More detailed news soon… 🤭

These last few days, I've finally started to work on my big project for @GIMP 3.4, which is our new format, which will trigger auto-update, very quick saves (even for big projects), more maintainable and extendable save/load code, but also much more.

E.g. it will be a basis for our animation support too.

This work has been very smooth so far, which is not surprising since the architecture choices are what make it easier.

To be continued…

I just merged a nice patch by Richard Allen for @GIMP's JPEG import plug-in.

With a recent enough libjpeg-turbo (most used JPEG lib), loading 8-bit JPEG through the 12-bit pipeline brings huge quality benefits.

It comes at the expense of all JPEG being loaded as 16-bit per channel, which means bigger files. Yet the qualitative difference is making this change a no-brainer.
Loading as 8bpc then converting to 16bpc, you already lost data (unlike loading directly as 16bpc).

I just pushed the support for the rotation of the new #Wacom Art Pen 2 🖌️ in #GIMP. This will be available in @GIMP 3.4.

Maybe I will even decide to back port this feature to a 3.2 micro release so that artists 👨‍🎨 with such hardware won't have to wait for months. 🤷

Thanks to Wacom for sponsoring the styli.

The End.

Very fun anecdote at @adullact Congress. Since the city of Echirolles proposes is agents to use Linux (on voluntary requests), one of the agents asked to have Linux installed on her desktop computer.
Her request got refused. Reason: she was a new hire and was therefore asked on her first day but had forgotten.

"Madam, your work computer has already been on Linux for 6 months now."
