For those who are interested in such things, here is an animation of timetabled London Overground heavy rail services for the week 2026-06-15. The map data is courtesy of @openstreetmap and the timetable from the Network Rail Common Interface File (CIF) timetable.
Today is one of those days when I go, "why don't I do a fun visualisation of passenger flows for London Overground as I have worked out a way to count services/carriages/seats?" to "As there is no overground network map, how do I extract this from @openstreetmap data? While I'm there, I ought to download the planet OSM file and rerun the electrification and rail network extract."
How is your Saturday going?

Inspired by others, I saw this at https://manchesterartgallery.org yesterday:
Peake, Mervyn: The Glassblower 1944
Mervyn Peake is better known as the author of Gormenghast but was also an artist.
The War Artists Advisory Committee, as part of their work to compile artistic record of Britain during WWII, commissioned him to visit the specialist glass factory of Chance Brothers, Smethwick, Birmingham, to record the making of cathode ray tubes for radar. This is the result.

For those interested in such things, here is a set of scripts to extract and filter data associated with rail from the full OpenStreetMap dataset for the Islands of Northern Europe (Great Britain and Ireland) as a GeoPackage here https://github.com/anisotropi4/magpie/releases/download/v2.0.1/ine-track.gpkg.
It identifies railway features, line speed and electrification scheme based on metadata.
The associated source code and repository is here:
For those interested in such things, here is a visualization of timetabled freight movement on the #British heavy-rail network, for the period (four weeks) 2026-03-09 to 2026-04-05, aggregated at a one hour intervals.
I think it shows that freight is very much 24h, that the extent of freight on the network and how Sundays are quiet.

It looks like the #DeadTree of "Route network simplification for transport planning" is out!
Thanks to @robinlovelace @josi and Zhao for making this happen, and was welcome happy news for the end of the week.
Best wishes to all those that celebrate the Spring #equinox
