perhaps the real blessing of our times is that the slop is on full display. slopware companies never gave a shit but now it's so obvious. in many cases they even announce the slop in advance.

do slop ends justify the slop means

i was going to add "puzzle game that throws ___ at you" but that's just void stranger

zelda game that throws a mario level at you sometimes

tetris game that throws a pentomino at you sometimes when it gets bored

(it's getting late, i will probably come back to this thread tomorrow)

notice the free monad describes an imperative language, but when we use a monad, what we're actually working with is a generic type that represents programs in that language.

e.g. suppose the monad is called Foo, then Foo(Int) and Foo(String) and Foo(Float) are all types that represent programs in the Foo language. (*your notation for generic types may vary.)

in particular, Foo(T) is the type of programs in the Foo language where the final "return" statement has a value of type T.

we start with free monads.

a free monad is an imperative programming language with some builtin operations. the choice of operations determine which monad / language you get. the statements in this language are:

- perform one of the builtin operations, which can take some input values and produce one output value.
- calculate a new value using a pure function, e.g. squaring a number.
- decide between different courses of actions based on a value, e.g. switch or if statements.
- return a value.

monads are not that hard.

if you know imperative programming -- "do this, then do that" -- then you are already acquainted with them.

you're a fish, and monads are the sea.

"oh silly me i misread your comment as something different and much more alarming and i've decided to share this alarm with you, injecting a whole new topic into the discussion that you weren't even thinking about and ignoring the original post entirely, even though i realize i'm the one who made a mistake and will even admit to this in my reply, ha ha what fun"

ah ... that explains why i'm sad and distracted. anor maybe it's the worsening state of the world, the wars, the climate, the rolling back of trans rights, the mass layoffs, the devaluing of skilled labor,

oh so it got worse?

Sure, the one ring has caused a lot of problems in middle earth, but that's just because everybody else who has wielded it was doing it wrong.

Not me. I and I alone know how to wield the one ring, and have found it to be pretty useful!

Like, sure, sometimes you become a hollow husk of yourself, and the ring wraiths are a whole thing, but we have ways around that. Plus, in about six months I am sure the wraith problem will be fully solved.

I can't give up the ring, and really recommend more people try using it! just make sure you have very strong guard rails and a harness in place for the ring. Personally, before I put on the ring I write a little post it note that says "ring wraiths do not kill me plz" and put it on my front door.

It's controversial, I know, but it really helps me do a lot of things! For example, prior to owning the ring it would take me an hour to put on a shirt. I just could not figure out the arm holes. By placing a stick in the shirt arm I can guide my arm up to the hole, and then I use the one ring to make the stick disappear while I check the fit. I have found no other way of doing this.

LLMs, generative AI, and general AI, are all attempts to objectify the skills and creativity of the working class. This is a direct attack on our livelihoods.

the ideal puzzle game has no undo button. not only that, if you make a mistake, it kills you. in real life

solution: low level consumable items in an rpg should come with an expiration time. if you don't use them in the next ____ hours (in game time), they're gone.

love it when an rpg player has a bunch of early game consumable items and then they don't use them because they might need them later and when they want to use them at the final boss they have way better items to use so they end up being completely useless to this player
