Of course that's no longer true cause everyone is like NUMBERS GO BIG ON BENCHMARK and lets not even check what whether the benchmark is contaminated or what it represents 🤷‍♀️

I give examples of how this happened in my upcoming book which you can preorder at https://www.simonandschuster.com/books/Deep-Unlearning/Timnit-Gebru/9781668093078?gad_source=1&gad_campaignid=24329797406&gbraid=0AAAAADv-uEkaCMvpVbcJdPwEAxVho5bEZ&gclid=CjwKCAjwrbfWBhAeEiwAc2e6Pn--thXajsLcQzP_lKQUk4TMQRM47-5qiQjH_0wotrEmL0RfXWZbqRoCf8kQAvD_BwE

There's a reason Yann LeCun was whining about his papers not being accepted in computer vision venues in 2012. It wasn't because deep learning "didn't work" then.

By then the benchmarks and metrics and numbers were already clear. It was because people didn't like the explanation of well I can't mathematically describe the properties of my models but NUMBERS GO BIG ON BENCHMARK.

MJ says: "there is an engineering discipline yet to emerge for the data-focused and learning-focused fields.”

It became, train big, test big you don't need to know anything else.

Then of course the TESCREAL people came and took it to a whole new level of pseudoscience, cults and secular religion.

But even before that, the erosion of appropriate engineering practices was clear.

While we're on the topic of the machine learning Michael Jordan and his interview calling this ridiculousness around fictional machine gods for what it is, let me share with you this essay he wrote in 2018 where he was similarly spot on.

With the success of deep learning, the deep learning philosophy has also permeated machine learning, which has little respect for actual engineering practices.

Anthropic is out with new nonsense about Claude (or the collection of models called Claude) deserving moral consideration and/or being able to feel distress, so my inbox is filling up with journos asking me to comment.

I've also got a day job, so here is a brief set of public comments on this:

These people discussed are deeply unhinged, deeply troubled, and shatteringly dangerous to society and humanity.

Not because of “AI is going to kill everyone”, which is little more than blame laundering their own desires and eugenics, but because they are polluting every aspect of humanity with their deeply fucked up ideology.

"In 2021, co-founder Anna Salamon, by then CFAR’s president, acknowledged that at least three employees had effectively been compelled to undergo “debugging,” the community’s term for intervention in a person’s own psychology."

Nothing to see here.

"Yarvin was not an outsider to the rationalist community; he had been posting in the community’s own forums before he started his own blog, and by 2011 LessWrong’s annual survey was asking members whether they had been influenced by him, because enough of them had that the question seemed worth tabulating."

Curtis Yarvin is in there too.

A Guardian article

https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2026/oct/01/forget-superintelligence-error-prone-ai-nearly-sparked-world-war-iii-this-month

by @timnitGebru and @emilymbender

about a CNN article

https://edition.cnn.com/2026/09/18/politics/us-military-ai-false-intelligence-china-ship

that reported a *fabulated* intelligence report;

AI generated fiction that could easily have caused serious trouble, even destabilize the already fragile state of the world.

Maybe The Pentagon should now publish an “Artificial Intelligence Deceleration Strategy” to replace its asceleration one...

When its all said and done, if these people end up being exposed like Epstein and his associates, everyone will pretend that it wasn't out in the open like this and that they had made it so difficult for us to expose them. The mainstream media will pretend that they weren't constantly platforming these people (hello TIME MAGAZINE, NYT, Atlantic etc), hello everyone else recently?

"I am aware, that if you are not lurking on the internet as much as I do, of how utterly insane that paragraph sounds. However, every bit of it is heavily documented by numerous sources. The people in this story are not a secret society coordinating over dinner. They are a social scene: overlapping friendship groups, funding relationships, and sexual and romantic relationships, all of it threaded through the institutions asking you to trust them about AI regulation."

Have you seen Ghost in the Machine yet? If not, you are in for a treat --- a thoughtful, wry deep dive into the history, present, and ideology of "AI". Streaming for free on PBS's YouTube channel in the US & Korea, rentable on Kinema elsewhere.

FLI is the one organizing Bernie Sanders's alliance with Steve Bannon and all that to supposedly stop the existential risks to humanity from machine gods.

These men sure seem like people concerned with "existential risks."

We've said a lot about the current leaders, but a little gem in case you're wondering about the history.

Anyyyyhow, your favorite Anthropic so-called whistleblower's media blitz was organized by MIRI.

Let's not even forget about the Future of Life Institute and the type of money they've given organizations like Lighthaven and stuff.

For the uninitiated, Bernie Sanders' AI bills are being written by a eugenicist cult full of predators organizing "rape orgies."

Michael Vassar in that list is also the former president of MIRI, the organization closely advising Sanders.

Guys, we can't except our "leftist" politicians preoccupied with the 1% and all that to care about eugenics or sexual assault or cults or anything like that right?

Like Stochastic Parrots, TESCREAL is also an acronym they hate and are talking about.

In the comments agreeing with a poster about TESCREAL, was Joscha Bach saying that the acronym basically accuses everyone we disagree with of being Hitler.

Funny he brings up hitler. "Very blue eyed indeed."

Everyone needs to read this. Reality is worse than anything we can say about these people in a few words, media appearances, op-eds, or other conversations. Read the whole thing.

🔇 🔇 🔇 Reminder: These are the people advising Bernie Sanders on "AI" policy.

New from @timnitGebru and me:

"It is high time for us to regulate usage of systems sold as “AI”, not because they are magical machines, but because they are error-prone products that shouldn’t be used in high stakes scenarios."

@Meron Lovely to see the people from all over the world who have joined us. I see Siri Lanka, South Africa, Germany, US, Argentina at least so far.

We are discussing horrific events but I'm glad to have this community around the world commemorating this horrific event with us.
