I may be poor, I may be unemployed, I may be unable to stay local to Boston in a little over a month, but I promise, I'm doing my best to at least volunteer at the one opportunity I found this year... helping with Girl's Who Code at a local high school this Spring.

Maybe that's enough.

Every time I read the words "vibecode" and "Claude" in my local livecode/demoscene discord, I die a little more inside.

#drawtober / #sonatober #3 - Gyro the Android
Ended up a little behind with a slow Saturday, so I finished the pose sketch yesterday into a lined out character design.
With 4 arms and 4 legs, he's quite the breakdancer.
Happy with the pose and design, but I still need to loosen up my process, will continue the grind with today's piece.
Hopefully I'll find time to color it, but it may be another inking just to catch up.

You don't pay people to write code.

You pay people to understand the code that's being written.

#drawtober / #sonatober #2 - Asterion the Minotaur
Stepped a little outside my comfort zone into my painterly style, which historically resulted in getting lost in the details rather than finishing pieces.
For another 4-6 hours, this one is mostly finished, though I did spend a long time remembering how to draw muscles.
A little academic and stiff, but unlike yesterday I enjoyed most of the process.
I think the ideal workflow for me is somewhere between yesterday and today.
Here's to finding it!

#drawtober #sonatober 2026 - Day 1
Stuck within my comfort zone today, drawing my sona as her default, in the style of a late 90s extreme sports game character.
I have not drawn something this disciplined in years.. trying to push myself through my old commission process.
I was able to get all the way past flat colors, just short of a full render, in about 4-6 hours.
It's not everything I wanted from today, but I am proud of myself for being able to do this after such a long time.

Physical Based Rendering with *real-time* Image Based Lighting running smoothly with my Impressionism renderer

The naive ray-marched demo-scene here is rendered at 1080p on both a:
1. 12 year old PC with an AMD rx5700 at about 250fps, with a grid size of 2 pixels (1 being the same as full resolution rendering).
2. stock raspberry pi 5 at about 60fps, with a grid size of 8 pixels (the engine deduces shape contours and smooths out gradient details in between).

Full PBR pipeline generated from a source 4K HDRi image via Spherical Harmonics!
- Running on a stock Raspberry Pi 5, 60 fps @ 1080p
- Cubemap/Lightmap generation currently takes 100ms (256 pixel resolution) to 250ms (1024 pixel resolution)
- Most of that time is generating the cubemap from the 4k HDRi
- Not sure just yet, but realtime lightmap generation may be possible even on this low power platform

We now have soft shadows, as well as every advanced material/lighting technique short of a full PBR pipeline
Running at 60fps@1920x1080 on a Raspberry Pi 5, with a grid size of ~~no longer 16~~ only 8 pixels!
The little super sampler that could is going further than I could have possibly imagined a month ago.

Music is an original track by me, ambient mix.

Missed an update here, been a productive weekend. My rendering algorithm is starting to shape into a sort of tiny spec super sampling.

compute shader vertex instantiation nearly quadrupled the performance of my special low resolution rendering algorithm
what does that mean in simple english? MORE ORBS TO PONDER 🧙‍♀️ 🔮 🪩
I am dumbfounded that this is running on a raspberry pi 5

The missed update is on my YouTube if you want more mashups

@aras sorry to bother you

forgot my password and no matter what I do, password reset emails don't seem to reach my inbox

i get other email notifs just fine, so idk what's up

this is the last device I have logged in, so hoping to fix it before a cookie expires

Fixed a bunch of bugs, and optimized the previous demo to 60fps@2560x1080.

Audio reactivity is not optimized, but I gained enough fps to test out the next generation of my VJ engine, now running on a native #raspberrypi5

Haven't posted about my #commodore64ultimate #raspberrypi5 project. I now have a graphics pipeline for VJing, after inventing my own algorithm.

RaspberryPiCasso, the low-powered climate-conscious robo-artiste:
- draws smooth geometry via dual contouring of normals over voronoi cells
- 60fps@1080p, 20 raymarches per 16x16 tile (<10% of 1 raymarch per pixel), 2x with shadow casts
- <10% the number of raymarches it would take to render per pixel
- <200 loc fennel, <100 loc glsl

@technomancy
https://github.com/LuaJIT/LuaJIT/issues/1476

luaJIT 3.0, but also the current source preview release, is introducing a lot of new operators like += and namely .? which Fennel already has as sugar.

Thought I'd give you a heads up as löve is already moving to test these features, luaJIT is presumably a preferred target runtime, and you maybe want to think about if/when/how fennel decides to sugar or not to sugar if these operands would be overloaded.

Anyone got references on how to do graphics programming right on low power, mobile, and in particular— tiled GPUs?

If I'm to keep this raspberry pi 5 and video core vii dream alive, I'm going to need to completely relearn efficient post processing pipelines for tile based deferred fragment shading.

The #commodore64ultimate #commodore64 #raspberryPiPico #raspberrypi 5 PC is alive!

I could finally afford the pi5 and various accessories. Lot's of 3d printing to mount everything securely and plug up the unused holes... plus some custom firmware to write so I can get the keyboard wired clean and direct into the pi5s GPIO pins.

I'll also finish printing keycaps so I can upcycle the capless #vic20 keyboard I also have lying around.

This is most likely becoming new target spec PC for gamedev!

Is there a game development, live code, tech/art, or programming languages mastodon server that has a strong anti-AI stance?

I know how to use the basic features of this website, but having a coarse filter for a poisoned water supply sucks both in effectiveness and user experience.

Please no reply guys telling me about filters/mutes when those don't work for a steady influx of accounts with no filterable footprint.

Showed up this morning, for less than $200 I got:
- an original #commodore64 vintage keyboard working via USB thanks to a #raspberryPiPico and some c code
- a brand new c64 mechanical keyboard mod also functioning over the same usb micro controller (plus +5v bus for the blue lights)
- the #commodore64ultimate starlight case
After some local free 3d printing and upcycle reselling, I'll have paid less than 50% MSRP. Hype to put a #raspberrypi 5, flex atx psu, and mid range GPU in this beauty.

It's happened enough times so I'm gonna ask.

Would gamedev folks appreciate a little video on formal transition systems, linear temporal logic, and model finding/checking... how it relates to game design/development, namely in an event driven paradigm... And my own guess as to why formal methods and programming languages solutions/tools for such things have not made their way into game development?
