“The problem is that most governments are by now infused with big-tech aligned employees, contractors and consultants. These people aren’t necessarily corrupt, but if you’ve delivered services for 25 years based on Microsoft platforms, it becomes very tricky to think about anything else”

Are you planning an event, meetup, or workshop during #EUOpenSourceWeek? Add it to the calendar on our EU Open Source Week website and help others discover it!

Every year, at the end of January and the beginning of February, thousands of people around the world come to Brussels to discuss open source and open technologies. The main attraction FOSDEM, Europe’s largest open source conference gathers developers, community members, policymakers, and innovators.

This is your occasional backup reminder - if you haven’t yet, go start setting up backups of any kind.

If you think you don’t need backups, delete everything you have on the device you’re using right now.

If that seems like a bad idea then you need backups.

Most white dwarf stars are indeed white. But about 1 in 30 have cool enough atmospheres to let elements adjust their shine.

This happened:

According to several sources (e.g. The Guardian), the US government "pressured multiple countries to withdraw their sponsorship of a leading European conference on #disinformation, with Canada, Lithuania and the EU’s diplomatic service subsequently agreeing to do so."

Wrote up the French supermarket fridge attacks.

Thousands of Danfoss refrigeration controllers sit on the internet, with a built-in login derived from the current date. Getting in is trivial. Getting a freezer to 50C takes a bit of refrigeration knowledge. No AI, no nation state needed.

If you haven't been paying attention to this story, it's truly wild - a supposed European alternative to big tech social media that lured in politicians and made waves but is incredibly poorly thought-out and is effectively doxxing its users. @_elena has been on it from the beginning. https://blog.elenarossini.com/public-by-design-how-w-social-makes-their-verified-users-personal-details-visible-on-the-open-web/

> Danfoss told AFP in a statement that most of the affected equipment was "legacy" products which "no longer receive software or security updates". It said its AK-SM800 and AK-SC355 fridge regulator systems were notably affected, with a version of the former using "outdated firmware". It added that it had long advised supermarkets to update from those models. Danfoss gave no figures of how many systems were affected.

if I'm reading this correctly, are they saying you needed to replace a _fridge_ because it no longer received firmware updates?

crazy stuff

Let's celebrate, today is Ada Lovelace Day!

Ada Lovelace, daughter of Lord Byron, was a pioneering mathematician. Known for creating the first machine algorithm for Babbage's Analytical Engine, she is widely celebrated as the first programmer.
