I finished watching Ken Burns's 12hr doco on the American Revolution last week.

The main surprise for me was how much the secession from Britain was driven by an active desire by the colonial elite to steal Native American land in the Ohio Valley.
We all know that colonial countries like the US, Canada and Australia are built on land theft (even if some still won't admit they know), but these were my main takeaways (off the top of my head, feel free to correct me but I'm not going to rewatch the doco to be sure):
1. After the French-Indian Wars of the 1750s (part of the global Seven Years' War), the British put a (temporary) pause on colonists from occupying land west of the Appalachians (nominally taken from the French, but still owned/occupied by Native American tribal confederations).
2. This was very unpopular and also did not stop land speculators from scouting the area, on behalf of (among others) George Washington.
3. Towards the end of the War of Independence, George Washington personally sent a general into the Ohio Valley to do a bit of a scorched-earth genocide of Native American villages (ie burning villages and crops) - presumably to clear out the existing occupants, but under some other pretext.
4. The Treaty of Paris in 1883 that ended the War of Independence royally fucked the Native Americans, even those that fought on the Colonists side.
