"Surprisingly, we find that providing context files does not generally improve task success rates, while increasing inference cost by over 20% on average. This observation holds across different LLMs, coding agents, and for both LLM-generated and developer-committed context files." 🤑

What is the #resistance governing agenda? - by Dan Froomkin
"Over the last several months, I’ve grown increasingly interested in what a resistance governing agenda would look like – first in Congress, if Democrats win one or both chambers in November, and then across all three branches, if Trumpism is rejected by the voters in 2028.
So I’m thinking about adding a new focus to this newsletter: examining what those two agendas might look like, by aggregating and analyzing the latest ideas smart people have proposed."

"France Becomes First Country to Ban Supermarket Food Waste"
"The French senate has unanimously passed a law that stops grocery stores from throwing away and intentionally spoiling food that approaches best-buy dates.
Instead, they’ll have to give all of this food to charities and food banks, which will provide the hungry with millions of more meals. Just a 15% increase in donated food will mean 10 million more meals per year."

EDIT: much more recent than 2016 news about programs in the US (poor results so far)

so I was looking a #covid dashboard and I see that cumulative infections per person (avg? median?) is up to 4.72
"Nearly 2 years after initial infection, 24.0% of 1,547 respondents reported ongoing long COVID symptoms." (ref below)
there was a study a couple-few years back that indicated people with more than 5 infections were more likely than not to be disabled or dead 😬 anyone have a reference for that one?

What happened in Chicago wasn’t a targeted operation against specific individuals for whom probable cause had been established. It was a general sweep. Everyone detained. Everyone held. Everyone’s liberty suspended until federal agents decided whether you were interesting enough to arrest.
This is exactly—exactly—what the Fourth Amendment was written to prevent.
And America yawned."

"A visit by the Guardian to downtown Portland on Saturday morning confirmed that the city is placid, the farmers’ market was packed and the protest against immigration enforcement in an outlying residential neighborhood remained small. There were just four protesters on the sidewalk near the Ice field office Trump claimed was “under siege”. One, wearing a chicken costume and draped in an American flag, held up a sign that read: “Portland Will Outlive Him.” Passing motorists honked in appreciation."

"“The President has sent agents here to create chaos and riots in Portland, to induce a reaction, to induce protests, to induce conflicts. His goal is to make Portland look like what he’s been describing it as,” Oregon’s junior senator, Jeff Merkley said. “He wants to induce a violent exchange. Let us not grant him that wish. Let us be the force of orderly, peaceful protest.”"

Austerity is OK with you?
"“At this point, you cannot just be MMT curious. You have to make up your mind, do you want the ‘scarce money’ framework? Is that the way you're going to view the world? Or do you view it through the MMT framework? Because there is no other option.”
Yeva and Steve agree that MMT is not a political ideology but a crucial lens for understanding that a monetarily sovereign government is the creator of currency, which means scarcity is serving another purpose – eg, supporting this economic system.
They talk about government spending during Covid as a missed opportunity to educate. They criticize so-called progressive politicians (hello Bernie!) who, despite likely understanding MMT, refuse to publicly champion its principles. This leads to self-sabotage (perhaps intentionally?) when they claim to argue for progressive policies within a conservative tax-and-spend agenda. Result? Austerity."
