Have you been making websites for years? How are you feeling about the current state of things?

I’ve thought for years the answer should be no styling! Be like a `section` or `div`. Let the developer turn it to anything.

Thoughts?

What do you want the new default styling to be for HTML fieldset?

Here’s what it’s been forever — a box around things, with the legend text placed over the middle of the line at the top left. (See https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/docs/Web/HTML/Reference/Elements/fieldset for more.)

If you write: `fieldset { appearance: base }`, what do you want the styling to be in the future??

Dark mode. Do the websites & web apps made by your team support dark mode? If not, why not?

What do you want to know most to help empower your team to support it?! What’s the blocker?

What is confusing or hard about dark mode?

WebKit Features for Safari 27.0, by @jensimmons and @saron.bsky.social and others (@webkit):

Do you make websites / web apps? What do you wish for <select> listbox?

This is the HTML. Currently, it creates a listbox with 4 options showing:
`<select id="foobar" multiple>`

If you want 6 items showing, you write:
`<select id="foobar" multiple size="6">`.

If you want a pulldown menu that allows multiple choices instead:
`<select id="foobar" multiple size="1">` — but only in Chrome.

If you could wave a magic wand & design something better, what would the HTML be? What else?

Assuming the quality efforts that went into Safari 26.4, 26.5, 27.0 were some kind of one-and-done project? Nope! Just look at all the improvements in Safari Technology Preview 253.

Lot of excitement about iPhone Duo and questions about Device Posture & Viewport Segments API. Both are supported in Safari 27.1 behind a flag.

To try out these API, download Xcode 27.1 beta: https://developer.apple.com/download/applications. It includes a simulator that supports the all-new poses and orientations of iPhone Duo. Go to Settings > Apps > Safari > Advanced > Feature Flags to enable both Device Posture API and Viewport Segments API.

When you hear someone say
“I believe Covid
actually did brain damage
to a large segment
of our population
which would explain
how people
are behaving differently now,”
just know: that multiple
scientific studies have found
that Covid
can indeed damage the brain.

Did you see the news about Safari 27.0, out this week?

Previous default UA styling for Customizable `<select>` on the left. Current default UA styling in Safari 27 on the right. Thoughts? We really wanted to give web developers a better starting place. 30 years of struggling to style form controls is enough.

As a web designer or developer, what questions do you have about iPhone Duo?

Yep: the new Safari MCP server by Apple is awesome and works great with agents.

Safari’s New MCP Server Is Great for Agents https://www.macstories.net/linked/safaris-new-mcp-server-is-great-for-agents/

Yesterday, we introduced the Safari MCP server 🎉

If you use an agent, connect it directly to a live Safari browser window so it can find bugs and examine the page on its own.

Available in Safari Technology Preview 247. Details here 👉🏽 webkit.org/blog/18136/i...

Give it a try and let me know what you think ❤️

Our friends at WebKit released a new cheatsheet for `display: grid-lanes` (Safari-only so far) with a built-in configurator and lots of examples. It has strong CSSTricks vibes from back in the day!

My team also did a livestream at WWDC, answering questions from web developers around the world: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LIxZ7XyjgSg&t=666s

I presented “What’s new in WebKit for Safari 27”. What has my team been up to? Squashing bugs. Paying off technical debt. Updating features where the spec changed & we were out of date. Rearchitecting whole systems to make them better. And more.
