Tracker cards, the ultra-thin, credit card-size cards people put in their wallets and the like, are becoming more popular. They’re handy if you lose a belonging or it's stolen. But does the small lithium battery contained within present a risk? Tech reporter Adrian Kingsley-Hughes tortured hers to find out and presents her findings in this article for @ZDNet:

PHP Foundation’s budget is about 700k a year. It’s used on something like 40 million websites. Almost no company who uses it contributes anything and many people work on it for free.

The latest trend is cybersecurity and AI vendors have realised they can vampire off its security for publicity (money).

Perhaps the world would be a better place if those orgs who rely on it just contributed sponsorship to the foundation, and vendors didn’t monetise vulnerabilities for themselves.

The PHP security team has shared mitigation measures for a new remote code execution vulnerability that affects systems with non-default configurations and has no patch.

My Illinois vote doesn’t matter much but someone needs to know.

Everyone has kind of laughed it off but there’s actually now an official investigation by multiple organizations into why my US election ballot hasn’t been released from US customs in a month without any explanation.

I don't want to ask a subreddit or something, they're all too toxic right now.

Hey friends, I'd like your thoughts on this on this, our friendly platform. Especially Australia IT pals.

I took a huge demotion (years of work) to be able to move to Australia. Happy with my decision, love my work, love it here, going for citizenship, no issues on my side. Life is worth more than money.

It's like, blatantly obvious though. I pulled most of my bios off the internet except basic LinkedIn.

Do I reduce my presence so that isn't as visible academically or professionally? Or is it something I can explain contextually in the Australian community in the hell market at my level?

@hacks4pancakes yeah… though I’d go much further and say that those privileged countries MADE it into a privilege. This papers please culture was more or less created in response to wars, as a “temporary” measure. Our system of literally judging everyone by the cover of a book is immoral 🤬

@hacks4pancakes I have most of the available privileges (rich country, white, male, etc.) and I work from other countries for a month each year.

The paper work you should do is significant. I even stay inside the EU to make things simpler (and I don't use planes any more).

The minimum you have to take care of in our legal frame work is:

• A "sending agreement" with your company
• An insurance letter from social security
• A legal briefing on things you must not do (e.g. working for certain customers)

The consequence of skipping those steps may be noticeable. E.g. you are not covered for workplace accidents and lose health insurance. You risk contracts of your employer.

And this is while playing the game in story mode.

@hacks4pancakes my company has a process and regulations for this, so you get management approval, all travel documents and authorizations (there’s nothing like claiming “nothing to declare” while carrying a laptop for of IP under export control…) and tax and social security. Even then, we have time limits based on geography (host and guest) specifically because of how national regulations do and do not overlap.
I guess if you’re used to right to work, you might as well do everything else with the same attitude, but your host country song your tax office are unlikely to know how to be chill.

@hacks4pancakes I seem to remember reading somewhere that the single largest class of "illegals" in Australia (bad word, because refugees aren't illegal) is not refugees, it's people who overstay their visas, typically tourist or working visas. They get the visa, arrive, and disappear into the wide brown land.

I don't know if there are any racial, ethnic or national commonalities between them.

@fullywoolly @hacks4pancakes “you cannot work on this visa” means not even a little bit. If you have to do something for work, you have to leave the country to do it.
