Absolutely fascinating video about transportation system design, not to mention just how badly USian's assumptions fail to reflect the realities of the rest of the world: https://youtu.be/csHdwHTteOw

This is long for on here, but the reasoning seems sound to me?

Haven't really done the podcast thing fora while. Used to like Planet Money. My kiddo has played me a few episodes of The Magnus Archive, so I'm starting there. And I suppose I could revisit Greater Than Code. Any recommendations?

Also, these kids have a *very* different relationship to time than I do. They'll be all "well, we have nine minutes until the next train arrives; let's go explore the town" or "okay, I've booked the flight; let's see if we can make it to the gate before they close the doors." #JetLagTheGame

I fell off a skateboard six weeks ago today, breaking (as I eventually discovered) two ribs. I've been watching a LOT of #JetLagTheGame while benched.

I'll probably never travel outside North America again, but... if I do, this show has taught me one very important lesson: do not, under any circumstances, trust #DeutscheBahn to get me anywhere on time. Or, possibly, at all.

"We got Deutsche Bahn'd so hard they broke out the emergency rations."

Oh NO [makes popcorn]

Fell off my skateboard today in a manner my brother described as "epic" and which I don't remember the middle of (I went from "oh shit" to "why am i napping on dirt oh yeah right ow"). Hooray for armored jackets and helmets (the latter not even scratched; I rolled sideways when I landed)!

Back hurts like 🤬 but my brother (to whom I gifted my first eskate) said "that was the most fun I've ever had on a skateboard" so I'm calling the day a net win.

Okay, this (gravity/downhill mountain karts) actually looks like a lot of fun, except for the bit with the cows 🤣

If only they had access to a model that was any good at finding vulnerabilities... 🙄🙄🙄

FFS: "As a coder in the AI era, if you don't have access to massive compute, you might end up producing far less software than your colleagues, threatening your career prospects."

On my best days, I delete more lines of code than I add. Any company rewarding developers based on the volume of "software" they "produce" is a company I am happy to be overlooked by for however long it takes for the compound interest on their technical and cognitive debt to crater them.

This fell out of my keepsakes box as I was putting it away. Presented without comment.

HAIL HYDRA

Quick update for those of you who followed me on the hellsite back in the day and miss those #tinygoth posts!

The kiddo is 17 now, a senior in high school, and has a Special Interest in animal bones. There is a roadkill collection kit in my car at all times. Here's an index card I found on the crafting table in the living room. (NB: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Baculum)

Birthday bullshit update: new tool chest just needs one more bit of hardware (a lid stay) to be fully functional; after that, it'll just be figuring out how to cram my essential tools inside!

Will also need to build door frames, acquire hinges, and install acrylic panels on the mobile base.

I've had enough birthdays to not be particularly excited about them, but I will absolutely use them as an excuse to indulge in my own bullshit just a little bit more than usual.

One of my friend groups is playing a video game that strikes me as a grittier, grindier version of Minecraft. They're trying to figure out how to manage a shared world given players with different levels of availability. This somehow led my brain to the phrase "itinerant blacksmith" and this honestly sounds like the basis for a truly terrible fantasy series...

(Edit: it's Vintage Story, you weirdos)
