...ended up ordering the thing.

Need to resist ebaying a tape library that adds another 35W (probably less when idle) plus noise from a bunch of small 1U rackmount fans to my home datacenter...

Make computing fun again.

Someone?

What the hell has Signal been using up 1GB of mobile data for over the past month!?

I only have one active Signal contact.

And a 1GB mobile contract that has been sufficient for everything until I installed Signal.

Hrm, different tile set at 1024x768x32k?

System is way more snappy at that resolution though…

So, that works in principle, but I should probably use a graphics mode with more colours (mach32 does 1280x1024x256 at most): @ipaschke ’s Nethack 5 port on my Atari TT running MiNT with a Nova VME graphics card.

My VLC - on Windows 10 - takes maybe 20 seconds to show up after clicking on a video, and today I stumbled over this article which cites some (in my opinion) equally improbable possible reasons for this kind of behaviour from both other users and VLC developers: https://www.windowslatest.com/2026/08/14/vlc-blames-windows-11-bug-for-slow-performance-defends-open-source-and-calls-out-microsoft/

Anyway, that one made me look at my VLC plugins, and other than the usual, there was one extension installed - an ancient version of VLSub for OpenSubtitles.org (0.11.1.), https://addons.videolan.org/p/2294535

Apparently it came with the vlc-3.0.23-win64.exe installer that I downloaded in January (but I didn't notice a problem until about April). This plugin seems to require an opensubtitles.org account and API key to supposedly do anything useful, which I don't have. (According to Virustotal, its file hash first showed up in 2022, and has been seen in various versions of Windows VLC installers - https://www.virustotal.com/gui/file/661ba9e5287efc4b066b6e4c0b23fcc2726471cf6ca67d53e6da0ac4b879cfaa/details)

After removing that extension (VLC\lua\extensions\VLSub.luac), VLC startup times are back to normal (instant) on this system, at least for now. 🤷‍♂️

Ooof, I did not realize how much of a relief it is to switch Thunderbird to the classic 3-pane layout (folder overview to the left and single-line message lists above message content to the right) on a small screen - the old 1280x1024 TFT I'm using with my RPi 400, in this case...

All this wasted space for zero more information...

Codeberg under attack again?

...it does let you turn them back on for now, though.

Ah, so it's that day then after the latest Vivaldi update...

Have RSS feeds been overwhelmed by LLM feeding scrapers yet? It seems like an obvious target (and hard to defend while staying usable - I have yet to see an RSS reader that would be able to solve anti-bot challenges).

@north The app I'm using caches the home timeline, so I still see your post, but it's not actually available on my server anymore...

Considering all of the GPL house of cards is built on the notion that copyright (copyleft) has legal value, I'm really astonished about all these "free software" organizations bending over so they don't appear hostile to code produced with AI contributions (which, according to current assumptions, is not copyrightable as such).

Is there some way in Debian to find out which package provides a (missing) file without blindly installing probable candidates?

@misty Anyways, thanks for having that out quickly, it's nice to not have to pull in Mastodon patches manually. :flan_thumbs:

Hey @misty, I noticed the release notes for https://github.com/hometown-fork/hometown/releases/tag/v4.5.11%2Bhometown-1.2.1 seem have "[..] use git fetch && git checkout v4.5.11" copied over from upstream, instead of referencing the Hometown version tag.

Nothing much in the upgrade guide this time, but as always, it's one of the ports changes that's going to bite me.
