I was given a Praktiflex camera. They were made from 1931-1959. I know next to nothing about it. I'm hoping I can get it working and take some photos with it. I wonder if I can find a manual for it.

Today's new problem. Binx discovered he can get to the beams and has traversed it at least a dozen times.

I went from seeing zero owls (but hearing them a few times per week) in the past 5 weeks of living outside the city to seeing 3 in 5 days. I'm pretty confident they were all barred owls.

In the last week I also saw a raven chasing an osprey, a coyote, and several deer.

I was excited to learn to identity northern flickers. Now that I know what they sound and look like, I see and hear them nearly everywhere I go. I have seen at least 2 per day every day the last week and hear them all over the area no matter where I am.

Our neighbor said they have seen 5 or 6 of them that are eating the fallen apples around their trees.

we have heard coyotes 5 or so times since then. we're not in the city any more!

does anyone know of a web map with live updates for fire/emergency dispatches in #kitsap county #washington? when i lived in seattle i liked using sfdlive.com, but i haven't been able to find anything like that for kitsap county yet.

I have to go to Seattle for the first time since moving to Kitsap County. It's very easy to do so- there's a bus that takes me directly to the ferry terminal so I can walk on. I am glad I don't have to drive or pay for parking or anything else.

How many syllables are in coyote for your normal way of saying it. I hear a pretty good mix of the two.

While I was away at the coopering class over the weekend, my partner sent me a photo of a coyote next to a tree approx 10m from the house. Glad we keep the cats indoors full time.

The bottom is wet because we tested them out in the shop sink, and I sat it in a little bit of standing water. I think I can fix the slow drippy leak I had using ground flaxseed, or even maybe just let it sit with water in it so it swells up a bit.

I did a 2 day coopered bucket class this weekend. It was a blast. It was all done with hand tools except using the band saw to cut the header (the bottom plate in the bucket). This one is made out of red cedar.

Does anyone have a good recommendation for an indoor thermometer and hygrometer? Bonus points for air quality measurements too. It would be nice to just have a screen and no connectivity to any external service.

I'd appreciate recs based on experience, not searches I can do myself. I have a hard time trusting websites' recommendations because a lot of them now feel like they're sponsored posts or straight up slop.

This morning, I dug through unopened boxes to find the two pairs of binoculars I have.

I might also be rapidly becoming a birdwatcher. There are so many birds out here.

I can hear what I think is an osprey right now. I've also been hearing what I think are chestnut-backed chickadees and red-breasted nuthatches. I've visually confirmed stellers jays and robins. I also saw a small bird with flashes of yellow but am not sure what it was.

I might be becoming the kind of person that sits outside with their cup of tea first thing in the morning.

We moved over the weekend and today is the first chance I've had to sit down and not be actively doing stuff (cleaning, unpacking, etc). It's very peaceful where we are now. This morning I've been listening to the breeze in the trees and a few stellars jays yelling at each other.

Here is a photo of my second wine stake in use. I ended up giving the first to a friend and haven't gotten an in-use photo. I gave this one to my sister when we were at her place for dinner over the weekend.

The design of this one is a bit better. The angle of the opening makes it easier to get a glass in and out. Also, it doesn't have a decorative leaf, which somewhat gets in the way too. She used this one all afternoon into the evening with what looked like zero effort.

The two people drinking (my partner and my sister) were enjoying a glass of champagne from 2005 in celebration of a significant life event for my sister. They tell me it was incredibly good champagne.

I didn't know what a driver was until recently, so here's my understanding of it:

It is used to drive down the metal hoops on a cask or other coopered items (bucket, etc). After the hoops are placed on the staves (wooden planks), the end with a groove is placed onto the hoop. The groove helps it catch the hoop. Then the flat face (like a hammer face) is struck by a hammer to drive down the hoop, seating it tighter. The cooper works around the hoop, driving it down until it is seated properly.

I also did some filing after taking the photos to clean up some of the corners that were a little sharp.

I completed the cooper's driver. I'm happy with how it turned out. I only need to oil the handle and it'll be ready to be used.

I only hardened the working end so the struck end will be less likely to chip or damage the hammer that strikes it. I tempered it pretty far back so that it's tough since it doesn't need to be super hard since it will only be used on mild (softer) steel hoops.

I wasn't sure how much to file the groove on the working end (the peen-like end), so I left it how it is now figuring I could adjust it later.
