havent been active here in forever but like i got this new laptop with an intel u300 and i'm trying to port coreboot, i havent even started and i fear i have no idea what's in store for me

I found a blue ethernet cable in a dusty box earlier today while looking for various USB-A/C/memory stick/SD card adapters. And now it calls to me, like the beating heart under the floor boards.

i am entirely the sort of person that if saw an option on my access point that looked something like "enable 802.11b for legacy devices from the 20th century" that i would have either switched it off, or left it off, on the grounds that i am simply not the sort of person that tolerates having ancient devices connect to my WiFi. Hmm. Yes.

Oh, is it possible that my 2008 netbook only supports 802.11b and my 2026 access point... does not?

oh, the tty thing needs

wscons=YES

in the /etc/rc.conf which is my new favourite buddy. Hmm, i suppose it's possible that i accidentally deleted a line like that while i was using ed to edit the rc.conf file because i am a Very Careful Person.

well so far NetBSD has been a pretty frustrating experience (Score nil—2: thin laptop is too frustrating while console messages from the auto-unplugging touchscreen (thanks Windows drivers) appear; smol netbook installs, but i can't get WiFi working, and it seems to have also dropped ttyE{1,2,3} (the virtual consoles).

I think ordinarily i would have given up by now if we weren't collectively sticking it to the big L; so that's fun! :)

I wrote a tiny static blog generator in a 100 lines of common lisp using cl-markless and feeder, along with other libraries I wrote.

https://plaster.tymoon.eu/v/7W020CN62#5256

It produces a perfectly readable blog with an RSS/Atom feed alongside.

You can save the paste as "update.lisp" in the directory with your blog articles written in Markless, chmod +x it, and then run it whenever you want to update the HTML output.

I use a very similar thing to produce my comics list and feed at https://shinmera.com/comics

Oh, the disk is made of spinny things. Haha, i had forgotten that, but it does help explain why a tiny laptop from 2008 has a 160GB capacity disk.

@Siph my basic install is literally just xfce4 and xfce4-extras after a fresh install. Alternatively, there's mate that works out of the box. Boosting in hopes that people will share their a-has

Are there any blog posts or anything that gives you a guide/recommendations on how to set up a daily-driver desktop environment on #NetBSD?

Sure I could just install it and go pkgin install xfce4 and just stumble around and figure out something that works for me, it’s very much within my abilities (I've done it before), but if somebody has done that legwork I’ll happily take it, especially if it can help me avoid getting into pitfalls and bad habits and practices without knowing and having people ask "what the fuck are you even doing" when I need to ask for help for something

Everytime i use this Netbook (Acer ZG5, above), i can't believe how unbelievably _cute_ it is. And well built. The battery is entirely user-replaceable, it just clicks out. There's a panel underneath that unscrews that i assume has ram or storage or wifi or something in it (remember when Mac laptops had a panel underneath that you could unscrew to install the _optional extra_ WiFi card?). Okay, so it's external monitor options are limited, it's VGA, but this Dell U2414 that i bought off a refurber for the price of 3 bagels has a VGA port! It has real wired networking, using a full-sized RJ-45. 3 USB ports, 2 SD card slots. A Kensington Security Slot. Separate headphone and mic sockets. And a slidy switch with a satellite dish on (i think it's hardware airline mode).

Yep. Got it in one;+)
