This endless blaming a lack of "supply" on the current rent price surge is really just out of hand. It's like, "OMG My landlord wants 35% more to renew. My kids go to public school, all their friends are here, i take public transit to work, I like everything about my life, but after looking around, I can't afford anything, so I need to pull my kids out of school, pull from savings to get a deposit for a new place in Oakland or San Leandro or some place outside the city."

THAT person is fucked. Building 1000000000 houses in a few years isn't going to change that for them.

So, I mentioned this situation someone was having to another build build build person, and was like, "Ok, go for the building, but the problem is right-now. What do we do to help all the people in this situation. Wouldn't some kind of rent control help?" and I was basically attacked like I was some kind of nazi monster.

We can hit these things from more than one direction. There's no reason that we can't build more AND not be assholes

anyone looking for an apt in SF, this is a seriously bad idea

My brother in law, who has a bunch of property, was telling my wife and I that he wants to start a foundation. I thought, "wow, he's finally going to do something positive", but I explained that he really needed to have some kind of charitable target.... some kind of purpose. He's like, "Oh, I don't know". So I prompited, "You know, who do you donate to now? I mean, I've got the ACLU, the SPLC, Habitat for humanity, GLIDE, some local non-profits. School PTAs and clubs. What do you donate to?"

Nothing. Literally told me he doesn't donate because the tax break doesn't benefit him enough.

THe guy literally flew to Rome to eat BY HIMSELF at some micheln star restaurant, yet he doesn't even tip the barista.

I'm no saint, and I honestly which I could do more. I look around and see the world degrading so fast, I feel some responsibility to do *something*. I just don't understand people that don't even *feel* like they should do more.

At one point, I didn't have money to help, but at least I *wanted* to.

Everyone keeps telling me that they listen to podcasts. I admit, I've never listened to one. I listen to a ton of audio books, but maybe I should try this podcast stuff.

Any recommendations?

is gentrification now considered a false theory? I spoke to someone saying that adding a slew of million dollar condos to a lower class area would cause more expensive stores to come in, more parking taken, rentals would go up, property values would go up. Landlords would bump rent up due to higher demand for the area.....

I mean, this was up for debate when I was in college political science classes 20yrs ago, but the real debate was whether or not it was a good thing, not really whether it was true.

Now I have people tell me it's utter BS and that very same situation will have the opposite effect.

I'm feeling like a maga-level of re-definition is happening.

Who are the famous people who you once thought were pretty good and turned out to be simply horrible.

I'll start:

John Fetterman.

Here's 2 questions:

1. If you are a district supervisor, and a construction company wants to build a strip-mall, and most of the people in your district don't want it, but the city as a whole is adamant that we really need that strip mall, and people who don't live in the district will go to it, and you yourself believe it might be a good idea to have a strip mall, is is your responsibility as a district supervisor to vote as your district citizens want, or as what the majority of the overall city's citizens want?

2. As a voter who was in favor of the strip mall, but not in that district, when the supervisor runs for Mayor or congress or assembly, do you hold it against them if they voted against the strip mall, or do you consider it evidence that they'd support their district?

This crap is infuriating. 4 rich guys formed a 502c(3) org, funded it with a million dollars, put in its description that it represented minority/immigrant grocery stores, then filed suit against Mandami for trying to put together city subsidized grocery stores to help people eat.

And all over the news, "Journalists", publish crap like this.

My kid going through my music is a bit disturbing. I've got sooooo much music stored up over the years.... some copied directly from cassettes.

She's like, "you have skinny puppy? bad brains? The melvins? wtf?".

It's weird that "kids' today" are listening to the same music I listened to. When I was a kid my parents were listening to fckin Opera and Classical music.

I think spotify and other apps that kind of pick "mood" music are keeping old music "alive". Not sure if that's a good thing or not.

Regardless, listening to some skinny puppy to start the work day is really bringing me back!

For years, I was a big steelers fan. It was kinda mandatory, coming from Pittsburgh. Then we got "Big Ben" and the stories of sexual assault. But, we all kinda just put up with it. FIguring, he'll be gone soon. He isn't the entire team. Then they got Michael Vic, the dog fighter, and I was like, "WTF? THAT is what you chose??". Then we've got Anti-Vax Rodgers? And finally, the owners threw trump a party and gave him a Steelers number. I haven't watched football since that day - and many of my friends also just faded away. Even one had a tatoo removed.

So depressing.

There aren't all that many construction companies out there that build actual buildings full of condos or rental units.

They have limited staff and time and money. They can only handle a fixed number of projects each year. So they focus on the projects with the largest pay-off. These are, by a big margin, luxury condos in the most expensive parts of town, while buildings full of affordable rental units require long term support and don't have the profit margin.

Technically, the process of "Filtering" says that building *any* housing will reduce the overall rental cost increases. However, the amount it affects that cost and *when* that affect starts is directly related to how close the target is to the developed unit.

100 affordable unit built today greatly affects all units in that price sector immediately.

100 million dollar conds built today barely affects affordable units and not for years.

So, yes, build more, but let's focus on making devopers build things that will help affordable housing soon

Totally bitched out my daughter for being a disrespectful asshole. Gonna be a real nice vacation weekend

Ugh.

As someone who sails in the bay regularly.... a PONTOON BOAT is not meant for that. WTF?

I've been sailing for like 40 years, all over the world, from Turkey to Alaska. All over the damn place, but SF Bay is not for beginners and it sure as fuck isn't for pontoon boats.

Sure, there are calm days, but I don't know how many times I was out on a dead calm day and by evening there were 3-4' waves with wind that was cutting back and forth. Times where I've had to sail AND motor to just turn the damn boat.

Whoever decided to take a damn pontoon boat to Alcatraz (of ALL PLACES!!) with 20 people was not thinking at all. I've seen some dumb shit, but that's fucking over the top.

How the fuck do new bands make a living. I'm at O'Reilly's in the Haight and the door man asks "what band are you with" and keeps track. Then at the end of the night, the band gets $5 for each person attending after they pass 15 people.

Wtf? So the first band had 20 people show up to see them. So they got ... $25 to split between the 5 of them.

Have you ever seen one of those big slow lava flows in Hawaii. I remember watching a video of one just oozing over someone's home, someone's neighborhood. Neighbors all standing there, helpless to do anything.

Reading the news, I feel like one of those neighbors, some of my other neighbors are cheering, even though their own homes are in the path.

And my own home.

it's just going to keep coming.

Good mornin' everyone! Thanks for being my personal therapist!

I don't want to go on some AI Rampage, since I have to work with it constantly, but this idea that you can have one monster AI that is going to rule the world and have all the answers is where the real problem is.

The biggest issue (for me) is the environment. But, I'm also not "I'm going to go off-grid and demand everyone else does too, that will fix it!"

So, with modern tech, I think you need regulation to "guide" things. Just like making it so you need a muffler and a catalytic converter - those were **LAWS** regulations put in place that corporations *did not want*.

With AI, it's the same and people need to stop just saying, "I hate AI" and start saying, "Look, this shit isn't going anywhere, so we'd better get on the steering committee before it is just a bunch of Elon Musk simps making the decisions for us"

- Find the positives and promote them.
- Find the negatives and ban them.
- Find a way to hold *PEOPLE* criminally accountable for releasing irresponsible products.

We can do this.

If there isn't a democratic representative on the steps of the DoJ demanding arrests 24/7, it's time to find new leaders

the fact that every single democrat politician in the country isn't SCREAMING for an invesigation into Trump and his rapist pedophile friends is simply embarrasing.

It's horrible to be a pedophile, but it's pretty fucking bad to watch it happen and do nothing about it but send me texts asking for another $10

so, who will be the first to stab Mandami in the back? The democrats or the republicans?

having Nancy Pelosi asking me for donations is so irritating. Nobody with 400M of assets should ever ask ANYONE for a donation to ANYTHING.

Honestly, this damn country is really just My Rich People vs. Your Rich People.

I'm so damn tired of getting texts every single day begging for money. I understand some normal person with a normal income asking for donations, but those with assloads of their own money? They can fuck right off.
