If you've ever wanted to dip your toes into Hindustani rāg theory, this video introducing the thāt system may be of interest. He only goes over the swara (pitches) of all 10 families and their eponymous rāgs without going into the exact rules, structure, key ornamentation and phrases, microtonality, core emotions and feel, time of day, etc. All in all it’s fairly basic, but it's a decent entry point without getting lost.

Two weeks-ish ago I posted about spotting an amusing parcel-related temporal paradox in my PostNL app. Well, the parcel is still, according to the app, "on its way." In fact…
"Will be delivered on Saturday 3 October."
Out of curiosity, because it doesn't mention the year, I had a check. The next time 3 October is a Saturday is in 2037. By that time, this building will have been demolished and my current address may no longer exist.

For reference...

I'm mildly obsessed with a guitar riff from the musical Jesus Christ Superstar.

It got lifted by an Iranian artist, Googoosh, in the 1970s and I've just found another artist who used it too in 1977, Neşe Karaböcek from Türkiye.

This is probably not of interest to anyone other than me but here it is...

Wonderful video here of the Project Hail Mary film's sound designer talking about creating Rocky's voice, including lots of examples.

“PS, to my fellow writers and artists of all stripes: It is a uniquely demoralizing time to be working right now, I know. But please don't stop. Do it for love, or do it for spite, whatever gets you through the day. But do not stop. They don't get to win.”

Australian underwater #archaeology reveals landscape and cultural heritage of great significance on the seabed.

"The Ngarda-Ngarli people have cared for Murujuga for at least 50,000 years. What this research shows is that our cultural landscape extends far beyond the shoreline and into Sea Country, where important parts of our story remain preserved beneath the sea,"

At heart I'm a damn hippie, so current mood: psychedelic rock, but global.
Let's go for Seera, an all-female band from Saudi Arabia. This is Aalam Al Ahlam (Dream World). The word سيرة (seera) means story/ journey, and that's what they try to do in every song, take you on a sonic journey that mixes Arabic and Western elements, and of course some essential psychedelic weirdness.

I got an email about this documentary film out of nowhere. It's been years since I've talked to Perry Yung about his excellent shakuhachis, but obviously I'm still in his address book. Regardless I'm quite happy to spread word of a project that seems to primarily be happening, because these guys are seeing a lot of things that make them want to challenge the narrative, again. So yes, boosts appreciated on the main post, and if you can donate or spread word in other ways. Awesome!

Slant: Made in America is a #Documentary #Film in production. Slant (RICHARD EBIHARA, WAYLAND QUINTERO, PERRY YUNG) produced 8 theatre shows confronting and parodying Hollywood’s stereotypes of Asian men, resisting pressure to assimilate into the dominant culture, and keeping ethnic cultural legacies alive, accompanied by rocking guitars, soulful shakuhachi flutes, and the insistent drum and gong beats of social justice for all. There's a trailer:

A gaggle of geese just flew over, and I can't help wondering.
What are they communicating to each other?
I imagine it’s like:
“V-formation tight, everyone! The headwind is picking up!”
“Copy that, Lead. My wings are feeling the lift. The air is crisper down here.”
“Look below—the flat fields are giving way to those rolling green hills we always pass. The ones with the deep river cutting right through.”
"Are we stopping at the usual wetlands for a rest?”
“Not yet. Keep honking, keep the rhythm!”

So there I was in between dinner and dessert, playing around in Logic and messing around with kalimba and drumbox for a bit. And then I get some random non-Electronic dance music? Or something. I'm not quite sure. OK, the effects are absolutely digital, thus electronic, just the sound for both was recorded with their in-built piezos and then manipulated, and looped. Anyway, my random musical experiment surprised me a little, and is absolutely not a music I normally make.

Folk legends are sometimes based on fact, and this discovery of a previously unknonw Roman fort may have confirmed an old Welsh tale.

TIL that a formal thank you in Romansch is “Gratzie fitg”

Unfortunately, with his accent, it makes it sound like this conductor is calling everyone a “Grassy bitch”

If you need a burst of joy in your life, load up the #Inktober timeline and just witness the amazing creativity, cleverness and artistry of the #Fediverse. It’s like the opposite of doomscrolling and I’m SO here for it.

Thank you to everyone who’s participating, especially those who don’t consider themselves artists or creatives. It’s so refreshing and inspiring, keep it up, you’re doing great!

Over the last couple of years, I've fallen in love with wooden functional fitness tools. There's something about them that's just more satisfying to me somehow, Plus no cold metal or nasty knurling. I got an update that this specialty store has received stock of some nice walnut clubs of various types, and I'm seriously tempted to expand my collection.
Just sharing in case. Maybe you’ve wanted to try clubs (or others), but didn't know where to get good quality ones. https://www.bodymind-fit.com

Well OK, apparently English-speaking people, when first encountering skunks and racoons, called them polecats and monkeys/wildcats. Many of the Germanic names seem to be calques of their scientific names, Mephitis Mephitis (noxious odour x2) for skunk and thus "stink animal", or the earliest one for racoons, Ursus Lotor (washer bear), before the species name was changed to Procyon, which admittedly is also wrong; they're not before-dogs.
I think that concludes my linguistic #Etymology sidetrack.

Now I'm actually curious to go find out what English called skunk and racoons before borrowing those from various Algonquian languages.
And hey, let's be honest, skunk itself apparently meant "pee fox" and racoon "was something like "animal that rubs its hands", so all the descriptive joy still applies, and along very similar lines even. 2/2 (Etymology)
