I finally got around to booting the #NetBSD image on my old Raspberry Pi today and it worked fine. 😀 👍 Thank you and congratulations to the whole NetBSD crew. ❤️++

Random question, boosts appreciated:

A community college in St. Louis is looking for someone qualified to come on-site and inspect their numerous kilns to determine if they're in safe working order. If you know any firms or individuals or where to start looking for qualified people for this job, please let me know! #Pottery #Ceramics #Kilns

Yesterday, I sold books at the Treats in the Streets (Halloween) Festival in Middletown, CT. This morning, starting at 7 am (😱, lol) I’m at Om Glastonbury Wellness Center in Glastonbury, CT at an event with free yoga classes and a sound healing from 7:00-2:00. This total night owl will be bringing her own coffee, lol. I’ve made up a special flyer about my books and wellness.

I have never looked into the accuracy of this list, but it exists.

Brady, of Numberphile etc. fame interviewed John Tromp, who for years did math related to Go, e.g. participated in computing the number of legal states on a Go-board.

It sucks that the best thing on the menu for blind computer users is polished turd.

C'mon FOSS people. We can do better than this?

@Xavier @prism I'll assume you're sighted so here you go, a small crash course on Linux for the blind:
Go to an OS where you have to gamble if your screen works in the installation or not first. You have only black and white colors and the UI is ugly, inconvinient and has the speed from two-three decades ago. Every time you do an update you have the chance of a driver to fuck up and you to not have a image on screen at all. To get your system halfway near usable you need to use and rely on patches posted on 2015 by some guy saying "it works on my machine". Needless to say 80 % of it don't actually work on yours. Thus, you write your own, daily.
Would you prefer to use such system over a system that is modern, blazing fast and receives stable updates and fixes reliably? Where your screen actually doesn't blackout when update your video drivers?
Does that sound impossible for 2026 and a huge community of developers that develops actively? Yeah sure it does, but now replace "screen" through "screenreader" and any visual details through audio. There you go - you got the state of Linux for blind volks and why telling blind users to use Linux is such an insult. You're asking somebody woh is able to start a machine and immediately reliably start a builtin screenreader to install more established software to willingly choose a system that gives you the opposite.
Linux is awesome. It's fast, global and memory-efficient. Of course I would use it if I could. I have no problem installing packages or working with the command line - infact I quite like it. What i have a problem with, though is accessibility being so decentralized. I'd have to very, very carefully think about which distribution I go to first, because changing distros isn't just reinstalling an OS. I potentially would need to patch my own installation media to automate the installation when no screenreader works and then I'm welcomed by needing to get into a completely different stack and somehow patch something that comes close to a screenreader on it.
Here some more reading from someone who wrote it down.

Just use Linux.

While we were at the Airlie Gardens pond, a group of ibises flew in and gathered underneath structures being set up for a holiday lights display.

In the sun's glare, that caused weird reflections in the water. Maybe the most ibises I've seen in a small spot.

Chilli ID request. What type of pepper is this? About 3 cm diameter.

Man, I feel really bad about upsetting that guy. I'm not quite mortified, because it was an honest mistake on my part (not realizing that including a link to someone's toot in my own toot is now the same thing as quoting it and so the person sees my toot, which was NOT my intent, I did NOT want this person to see me using their fresh personal tragedy as fodder for my personal soapbox ranting, I am not that crass I swear!) but still I feel rotten.

imagine if the official linux foundation account helped you with your wifi

Frankly learning about this was enough to make me stop buying chocolate, and I love chocolate.

If you didn't know, well, sorry to be the one to clue you in, but now you know.

So if you buy chocolate (and are not really REALLY careful whom you buy it from) you are part of the problem.

We can have chocolate without the child slavery, I have to believe that.

But we won't get it as long as we keep buying slave-grown chocolate.

"Apathy" is when you don't know and don't care.

"Complacency" is when you know and still don't care.

E.g. apathy is not knowing that chocolate beans are harvested by enslaved children. Complacency is buying chocolate anyway.

Happy Halloween!

On the other hand, these poor fools are being fought, actively fought, by shady men in suits who, as far as can be told from their behavior, are totally amoral money-lovers who will do absolutely anything they think they can get away with.

"ingorance", eh? I'm leaving it in, I like it.

I mean, why not blame the user if it is in fact the user's fault?

There's only so much "foolproofing" you can do and to think otherwise is Hubris.

This is actually one of the huge tensions in my intellectual life:

"Don't blame the user." vs. "My God they're so stupid and self-abusive, and their ingorance, stupidity, apathy, and complacency is causing so many goddamned problems, WTF people!? Get a fucking clue already!?"

Cipolla's Fourth Basic Law of Human Stupidity:

> Non-stupid people always underestimate the damaging power of stupid individuals. In particular non-stupid people constantly forget that at all times and places and under any circumstances to deal and/or associate with stupid people always turns out to be a costly mistake.
