Google’s AI pinned another man’s sex crime on a doctor, and a German court says Google must answer for it
Two German courts, in Munich and Aachen, have ruled that Google is liable for false claims in its AI Overviews and AI Mode, treating them as its own words.

“On Wednesday afternoon, Carolyn Marvin was leaving her flu shot appointment when she spotted an Uber Eats robot rolling down the Center City sidewalk. So she did what she has done for months whenever she's had the time: stand in front of it.

“Marvin, 78, said she's not sure how many times she's blocked the path of these robots, which hit the streets of Philadelphia in March. The University of Pennsylvania professor emeritus has made a practice of it to protest ‘corporations that displace human delivery workers in order to enrich their own bottom line.’”

Lo-o-o-o-o-ng visit from my beloved 💚 Thelmabelle 💚 the wild turkey in our very own backyard this morning. Unlike Sergio, she doesn't sprint like Sha'carri when I open the back door to get pics. Said pics are forthcoming, partypeople, fret not.

random thought:

• you should have forums for your hobby / subculture / open source thing / etc., that are not discord, and that are openly accessible in HTML online. you should try to make those appear on google and be like the place to discuss the thing, if that's at all doable.

• many online subcultures used to have a politeness norm of "don't ask questions without first googling it". this rule is obsolete. googling it doesn't work anymore. stackexchange is dead. it is very difficult already to find reliable information. you need to make it as easy and inviting as possible for curious people and newcomers to get used to asking human beings about the thing. this means tolerating common questions rather than replying to them like "read the FAQ/TFM/search the forum" etc.

• in fact, actively establish spaces specifically meant for people who are too intimidated to ask questions. in a reddit-type forum, do "weekly quick q&a thread—all questions welcome" kinda thing (it's less intimidating to post a brief comment than making a question post). do "weekly casual chat thread" and "beginner's corner" and "off-topic fridays" and stuff like that, too.

• and on the converse, actively discourage people from posting chatbot answers, through both forum rules and fostering forum culture. don't be aggressive about it but also don't be lenient.

This place certainly has personality. Unfortunately that means the ceiling might fall down on you, and the kitchen is like a fever dream.

The SFC is not our ally, and has not been for quite a while.

One of the biggest disappointments in recent years for me.

A woman goes to a therapist. “Doctor,” she weeps, “I suck at public speaking!”

“I’m a clinical social worker, not a doctor,” the therapist says. “And just go watch that footage of Katie Zacharia BOMBING—you’ll feel so much better about yourself haha.”

The woman burst into tears. “But Doctor…!”

Reflexively people will want to call Katie Zacharia stupid, but she seems to have timed her television appearances to coincide with Orange Julius Caesar's viewing hours in order to get his attention. It seems to have worked.

Honestly I'm puzzled as to why her lying about her legal credentials is a hangin' offense. Like rubbing their lawlessness in our faces is a favorite thing of the Reich, as is disdaining the press (totally fair).

Thing is, now she has Wikipedia/Grokipedia pages and her husband does not. That likely will not go well for her.
