All right, #NetBSD folks, I need some help.

I just upgraded a Raspberry Pi 3 from 10.1 to 11.0. I'm using the evbarm-aarch64 port, which until today worked just fine. But every time it boots after the upgrade I just get:

init: `/bin/sh' or `/etc/rc' terminated abnormally, going to single user mode

I found the sh.core file in / and ran gdb against it. gdb says that /bin/sh terminated with SIGSYS, Bad system call and that this is coming from /lib/libc.so.12.

Does anyone have any idea what's causing this and how to fix it? Unfortunately this is happening on the device that I run Asterisk on so my phone system is completely out until this gets fixed.

I missed #Caturday so here's #PartManxFreyja today, laying in her cat carrier's clear dome. Taken with my new gooseneck webcam (with manual focus!) I'm using with my GPD MicroPC 2. #Cats #FediCats #ManxCats

People are setting off fireworks off and on outside on this #Caturday. That hasn't stopped #PartManxFreyja from enjoying herself in the living room and showing off her #FuzzyTummy. #Cats #FediCats #ManxCats

Welp, Illinois will soon require age verification in every OS as part of "protecting children" from social media. https://capitolnewsillinois.com/news/illinois-bill-limits-how-social-media-companies-can-target-feeds-to-children/

It's been so long since I've posted a #Caturday pic of #PartManxFreyja. It's been a gloomy day (though the sun is starting to peek out here in the evening). And for Freyja it's a lazy Caturday. #Cats #FediCats #ManxCats

There may be less than an hour of #Caturday left here in the Central Time Zone, but #PartManxFreyja still has plenty of energy and will probably demand I take her outside later tonight. #Cats #FediCats #ManxCats

Following me for the sake of promoting something earns a block from me. I didn't come to the Fediverse only for shitheads to start trying to sell me shit.

Alberto Burneko over at Defector says everything I've been thinking about James Dobson and his death, though I think Dobson's homophobia didn't get the attention it deserved.

There's a reason why I call people like Dobson peverted sadists.

I just made my first two Anderson Powerpole connectors, though admittedly one has the positive snapping out after disconnecting. The other was for my FT-817ND and works fine.

Getting the clip into the connector was a pain. It was less of a pain when I saw a cutaway from Anderson itself showing the clip is supposed to go over the spring. Neither of the 2 YouTube videos I watched before seeing that cutaway mentioned this. When making tutorials like that it's important to mention such details.

For my fellow USAians: if you've tried to introduce OpenStreetMap to other USAians but they find the non-USA-ness of it off-putting there's OpenStreetMap Americana, which renders OSM data in a format resembling a traditional USAian road atlas.

I'm sure I've mentioned this before but I'll do it again. And unfortunately it doesn't do a good job of rendering bikeways or footways, though it actually renders busways, which the standard OSM map doesn't do. https://americanamap.org

For once I have a picture of #PartManxFreyja for #ToeBeanTuesday! She happened to be laying on top of a plastic containter on the top shelf here.

I just found this blog post by Dan Sinker as a link in a comments on a Freethought Blogs post. And it resonates with me. Given how the Fediverse in general (or at least what I see) thinks, I'm pretty sure it will with a lot of people here. https://dansinker.com/posts/2025-05-23-who-cares/

Carlos Greaves at McSweeney's has an article you can just keep permanently bookmarked and dust off every time the US mainstream media reports on the US government going to war. https://www.mcsweeneys.net/articles/editorial-template-for-every-time-the-united-states-goes-to-war

More on the RDS. This is the only radio I have that can display all the fields in RSS, not just Program Source (PS) and Radio Text (RT). This is not only a really nice feature as a listener; it will also help a lot when I set up RDS at WEFT in earnest.

This also means you can use a RDS Data field from an FM station to keep the radio's clock in sync. I've not had much luck with that, though. The station to do that with here in Champaign is WILL-FM on 90.9.

More on the radio. The DX-286's much-touted FM capabilities live up to what I've read online. In fact this radio & the GE Superradio III are the only 2 radios I have where I can't hear images of nearby station WLRW on 94.5 anywhere but on 94.5. And unlike the SRIII plugging in an external antenna is a) much easier (3.5mm jack instead of screw terminals) and b) makes a difference on both LW/MW/SW AM and FM.

The other two features I like are full RDS on FM and the signal strength numbers.

I got a new radio delivered today: the Qodosen DX-286. It's a great little radio with excellent FM band characteristics and just the right amount of features to satisfy a techie like me.

Unfortunately using it on the AM broadcast band (known elsewhere as mediumwave or MW) reminded me just how much of a wasteland most of that band is. Reactionary propaganda posing as news and talk shows on almost every station. This is what primed people for Fox News and then later Newsmax, OANN, and Breitbart.

I wish websites would stop assuming I'm reading their site using a tiny "smart"phone held in portrait mode. Firefox's reader mode helps (but only on desktop; it doesn't allow you to change the text width on mobile). CSS was supposed to solve this problem by providing multiple stylesheets for different views of a website, but it seems web devs just decided, "Nah, we're just going to design for smartphones held in portrait mode and everyone else can eat shit."

Seriously, I think people 20 to 30 years from now are going to look at the "average" cars here in the US the same way USians look at the long "boat" cars of the 1970s: as huge monstrosities that they can't imagine anyone actually thought looked good. Except instead of being too long the cars of today are excessively tall and wide.

US car culture today: "The driver with the most class has the car with the biggest ass."

#PartManxFreyja eagerly awaits your hand so she can spring her trap. #Caturday #Cats #FediCats #ManxCats
