Not exactly a new feature, but a more accessible one. The original AMIGA IFF/ILBM plug-in required an external library to import images.
Unfortunately, the library is no longer maintained, and we've had several security reports against it. Also, we could only build it on Windows and flatpak.

I finally ported the plug-in to process IFF files without an external library. This means that GIMP can open IFF files on *any* supported platform now!

The Metamorphosis Monastery, or Meteora, in Thessely, Greece, is at the top of a giant pillar, so to get people up they’d lower a net on the end of a rope. Then the monks in the picture would turn the capstan to winch the visitors up to the monastery! Maybe today they have an electric winch - this was in 1890.

On a whim I decided today that I wanted a new #Minecraft skin that represents my fursona. And I didn't want to wait for someone to do a commission so I just bit the bullet and tried my hand at making it myself! super scary

I don't really do #PixelArt or anything of that nature, but I am really happy with how this turned out! Especially since this was done from scratch in #GIMP without any templates, tutorials, presets or anything like that.

Cool write-up by @rangelovd about better cursors in #GIMP:

News from #GIMP repositories:

* @CmykStudent merged their initial code for a Shape Creator tool (a meme is gone!).
* @martymichal is improving #GEGL buffer iterators.
* @harshhvermaa implemented a new GUI testing infra using #dogtail framework.
* Bruno is still working hard as ever to fix OS-specific papercuts for Windows or macOS builds (like the random blank UI bug on #macOS! 😱).
* @zemarmot is working hard on completing the new extension platform.

Love from GIMP team! 💌

Open Source Tool of the Week: GIMP

Use this free, open-source image editor to crop photos, resize newsletter graphics, and prepare images for community websites. Work on a copy, then export as JPEG for most photos or PNG for transparency and crisp text. Check dimensions and file size before sharing.

A good part of this work was funded by the GREYC (@gmic's research lab) a few years ago.

This feature is backed by a #WIP repository for third-party makers to publish their work. Server side work was funded through 2 GSoC internships.

All the rest is being funded (still to this day) by our patrons, at #Patreon or #Liberapay, through the LILA non-profit:

Don't forget you can donate too, if you appreciate our work on @GIMP and/or our art work!

🌟 On the Way to Safespace Station 1 🌟
I've created it within 24 hours (minus sleep and breaks, ~8 hours) with lovely open source software Alchemy, Krita and GNU Image Manipulation Program.

The Andromeda Galaxy (M31) with its two satellite galaxies, M32 and M110. This image was created from 114 x 30s exposures (57 minutes) under Bortle 4 skies with no moon, but with occasional fog rising from the ground.

A very cool thing - not done by me, though I helped a bit in review.

Ryan McDonald implemented non-destructive text transforms! You can now apply standard 2D transforms (scale, rotate, etc) and still edit the text afterwards. Now all our vector-type layers can be transformed non-destructively!

Now I need to update a few of our vector export plug-ins like SVG and PDF to support exporting text with transforms. :)

Latest Shape Tool updates:
It's now multi-layer aware when drawing destructively. You can select multiple layers/masks/channels and draw the same shape on each one all at once.

There's now a Spiral shape type!

The GUI is starting to take shape (ha!). It still needs review and feedback by designers, but it's looking more organized and less like I slapped it together as I added features. :)

Here is a better quality version of the image digitally painted by Aryeom of #ZeMarmot, with @GIMP, around 2013 (actual creation date unsure; was too long ago!) which @CmykStudent was using in his demo video (https://fosstodon.org/@zemarmot/117400877876836823).

Artwork title: "Apple Cake and Cinnamon Tea"

File retrieved from the web. I wonder if she still has the original file for this.

Ahah fun. Thanks @CmykStudent for doing your demo video using one of Aryeom's (#ZeMarmot film director) artworks!

This still-life painting was digitally painted by her around 2013 (AFAICS) fully in GIMP, and we were both still in the "discovery" phase of @GIMP. She made it in the context of a digital painting contest (which she won) organized by the long gone GIMPusers website.

That was long before she became GIMP's lead designer and us globally its maintainers! 😄

More progress on the shape tool. Now you can draw polygons and stars - with the power of MATH!

There's also an option to change the stroke width, though I realize the label is currently missing. Easy to fix as I keep working on this.

Fun story: I got labelled an "Amish" (more accurately: we got compared to Amish who debate merits of horse carriages 🐴over cars 🚗) yesterday for refusing a genAI patch in a merge request for @GIMP.

It's not like we don't explicitly write in our merge request template that any genAI contribution is refused (code, but also text, images…), and as though we haven't said it explicitly for years now.

Anyway, so now I'm an Amish. It made me laugh. 🤣

I started developing a Shape tool WIP earlier this year, but paused it when a new contributor expressed interest in developing it.

Since that never materialized, I decided to update my in-progress code with some new things I've learned since - like how to show a preview on the canvas as you drag to move the shape!

Still plenty to do to get it ready to use, but it's beginning to look like an actual feature now. :)

With help and test images from @akkana, we now have a functional [Camera RAW import] fallback plug-in as a dev branch!

Right now it just imports the image with some default values. We'll see if it makes sense to provide some GUI options on import (though again, this is just a fallback - using the existing #darktable, #rawtherapee, or #ART plug-ins would be better for more control!)
