You remember the antagonist in Ultraviolet, how he had those in-nostril filters? I always thought that was a pretty good idea.

Turns out, there’s a company that makes such things. They’re not as stylish, more designed to be as invisible as possible. I’m trying out a sizing set now. Not sure if the L or XL fit better. Neither is quite right, and they don’t quite want to stay where I put them. Discs aren’t good at staying aligned in a cylinder, cylinders would work better.

Honestly, not sure they’re going to work out. Was looking for a risk-reducing option that still allowed for eating, but their advertised effectiveness, combined with the insecure fit, makes me think the reduction will not be adequate.

To be fair, other than not staying put and feeling like I have to adjust them every few minutes, they’re surprisingly comfortable, both to wear and to breathe through. Breathing resistance is not meaningfully different than with my Flo mask.

Ok, they get more uncomfortable when talking. To the point of “gah! [yanks them out]”. So, another point against. Back, I think, to the drawing board.

Vaguely pondering the idea of taking a casting of my nostrils and having something custom made that I can put replaceable filters into. I’ve got plenty of the Flo pro filters laying around I could cut up to fit, just need the framework to hold them.

@tithonium my housemate recommends the rocky air nose mask. Note it comes with two filters and the charcoal one makes breathing difficult. He takes it out and leaves the particulate filter in since he’s not in a chemical situation, only wants covid protection. It’s a bit large for eating but it can be done. Good luck.
