NHK is Japan public television. Politically I feel a distance between Japan's government and my own views, but I have a certain affection for NHK, despite the feeling that it's often putting one over on me as a propaganda site. I notice that its management has committed to taking the UN's #SustainableDevelopmentGoals seriously and regularly produces programming that attempts to support that commitment. When I think of the behavior of my own country of late, and its impact on media, I find myself watching NHK quite a lot as a corrective.
The SDGs are too weak to capitalism's drive for infinite growth in a finite environment to save us from what we've done to ourselves, but they're an attempt to apply the brakes as opposed to tromping on the accelerator. In the absence of anything better that's being implemented at scale anywhere, I'm inclined to promote them.
