It's funny when you spend months preparing to present at a professional conference, only to find out a day before it starts that someone got sick and they'd like you to tackle a second presentation on top of your own.
Why not, let's do this!

Got to love seeing @pluralistic included as a solid contrast against some of the other titles in this display at Indigo
Only real disappointment is the laughably short prison sentence for committing so much fraud.
The woman is already out on parole? Geez
This article about the takedown of dodgy #vishing phone scammers is a good read. #TorontoLife rarely disappoints with these stories.

Shared with a bunch of friends and thought, well, you'll likely enjoy the read too
Being told to "please drink responsibly" in the same sentence as "you will be issued one drink ticket," is just wow.
How big is this one single drink ticket going to be? A goldfish bowl cocktail?
We get a week's advance notice of a major snow storm but the worst smoke storm in the world seemingly caught Toronto by surprise
It's as if they don't want us to question all the pipelines for Alberta tar sands oil or something
I think I'll always be one of those people who finds the idea of buying brand new clothing in "distressed" condition hilarious.
Oh it's torn and faded? But you paid how much?
Yeah, sure, kk
The #TorontoBlueJays lost 8-6 to the #ClevelandGuardians but at least we scored a lot of swag at #SkyDome tonight including a popcorn bucket commemorating last season's epic run
Friend of mine just shared this chef's kiss on the matter of #enshittification and my first thought was, has @pluralistic seen this??
Bell Canada is having a major internet outage.
Fun way to find out who's #WFH today and which provider they're using.
What are the odds #Google laid off the person who was supposed to updated the expired #Chromecast certificate?
Well the good news is that maybe the #Chromecast failure mystery got solved.
Expired certificate
https://www.reddit.com/r/Chromecast/comments/1j7lhrs/the_chromecast_2s_device_authentication/
There's our problem: Not After : Mar 9 16:44:39 2025 GMT! Google issued an intermediate CA, presumably the one for all 2nd-gen devices, with a validity period of only 10 years, and it just expired. As a result, none of Google's official clients succeed in validating the device as genuine and they refuse to talk to it, including during initial setup.
(Fix details per OP)
In addition to the Chrome fix below, here's how you can fix casting from Android! Connect to your sender device (the phone or tablet you're casting from) using ADB and run the following:
adb shell am start-activity -a com.google.android.gms.cast.settings.CastSettingsCollapsingDebugAction
(Android 11 and earlier may need CastSettingsDebugAction instead of CastSettingsCollapsingDebugAction.)
In the settings panel that pops up, scroll down to "Connection" and enable "Bypass Device Auth". That should fix casting from apps and partially fix the Google Home app (I can now see the device and casting status, but some things like changing its name still don't seem to work. That might be something transient on my end, though.)
For those without ADB access, it should be totally possible to make an Android app that launches this hidden settings pane automatically. If anyone wants to do that, go ahead! I'll edit this post
I was on the phone with a US call centre yesterday and the operator corrected themselves and instead of privilege said let's call this a perk. I thought was weird.... Ah:
Vendor: we're adding #AI features to our product
Me: good for you. Can I turn them off?
Vendor: we have guardrails!
Me: is one of them turning off the whole AI feature?
Kind of neat that VIA Rail has made it easy to track where your train, or any train, is currently located and how fast it's moving.
Example:
https://tsimobile.viarail.ca/index.html#79
Too bad they can't leverage this cleverness into avoiding stupid delays like "we can't enter the station because there's another train still there."
You have more than one track at most of these stations!
I know it's not that simple, but wow, a one hour delay on a 5 hour scheduled rise is a bit wild and affirms some of the commentary I've read and watched from @notjustbikes
Funny how it's colder in Buffalo than Toronto right now
It is about time I set up a spam filter that automatically fires anything and anyone with "Black Friday" sales promotions .... out of a cannon... and into the sun.
Wish @LRRRonEarth would lend me that cannon.
Just watched @notjustbikes newest video on YT
https://youtube.com/watch?v=wPcuL2S2dgk&si=e0l0FU9FpQUsL1FP
End of video has a fascinating rant about the Via rail baggage policy
Naked cash grab. Like the weight of your bag on a train really matters.... Wild.
Oh this #darkTO is a bad one
Loss of supply from Hydro One means a major power station got knocked out - I'm willing to guess due to flooding after this morning's storm
