Everyone, and their grandmother (if she has a smartphone) just received this in #Taiwan (maybe the north part)
Even my no-SIM inserted (WiFi only) spare phone...
New thong: this time they will also cut mobile internet during the security drills.
Here's to "offline first" and "offline available" tooling!
For the funs: podcast downloads.
For the real: offline / meshed chat apps to try.
Anyone have suggestions for a good one on this last bit?
"Gosh, we made it to the end of today, and it's almost #Caturday. Phew!"
I'm having a new look here, an updated profile picture.

Taipei earthquake now.
The morning's a- chilling....
It was a total failure last week. Let's try, try again this week!
Personal growth plan for this week: touching grass.
Been battling with not being able to login to the EvaAir website (Taiwanese airline) on my Linux laptop (no Firefox, no Chrome, no Vivaldi....) with the very informative error message like this...
Solution seems to be: change the user agent string setup for the browser to anything else. Make it Windows, make it Android, but not "just" Linux... https://www.whatismybrowser.com/guides/the-latest-user-agent/firefox
Suddenly I can log in.
This is cursed. Or quaint...
I'm glad I work in IT b/c I can fix things but I'm also permanently damaged.
Kitty is helping with the puzzles in Thimbleweed Park, by providing emotional support. Definitely refuses to give me hints, though....
A little baking, some opening of the oven doors, and a bit of Newton's Law of Cooling in action :)
Validating my toaster oven's temperature accuracy and stability... A MAX31855-based k-type thermocouple reader, a RPi3, a quick revival of @adafruit's deprecated library, MQTT to send between machines, and mqttui to have a peek whether I got things more-or-less working...
And the result that the "225°C setting roughly means 170°C temperature"... No wonder my roast were not a-roasting recently! 🙀
Today's braindump, inspired by switching my main search engine to Kagi @kagihq documenting times when some friction did me good!

Linux users unaffected.
And, it all started (like many other rabbit holes), when I wanted to contribute a bit to the ArchLinux community... https://aur.archlinux.org/packages/gcc14#comment-1057039
and now that's about total 20 hours sunk into this...
I'm at a risk of a very deep rabbit hole with the Interplanetary File System (IPFS) https://docs.ipfs.tech/ It has evolved quite a bit since last time I dug in 3-4 years ago, and it's even more sprawling, with more potential use cases... Still, the basic "let's (relatively) easily share some files" is the core part, and it's certainly all relative 😅
Also it is clear that my "go bag" is not really ready to "go". 😬 Maybe that's generally a "good idea that is difficult to execute well"? --- this might just be an excuse, though...
"2nd strongest since 1999" and "authorities have reported no major injuries from the earthquake." shows how far preparation gone in #Taiwan in those 26 years...
It was really a shake-shaky-shake-shake at 11pm, and I didn't guess how big it was.
Keep calm and build earthquake-resistant structures!
Once again in the winter holiday season, with resting and more time to think, my unwritten blog post count is through the roof!! 🎉 Yey!
(My written blog post count stays at a steady 0, as usual as well 😅)
My Watch Later list on Youtube got above 1000 videos recently.
I was considering a Watch Later Bankruptcy: removing all and starting from scratch.
In the end I'm trying a "closed door policy" of have to watch or delete every one of them before adding anything new. So far 40 down, 960 more to go...
I've been setting up @archlinux on my new laptop (hello @frameworkcomputer) and took a detour to write about it... -- Installing Arch Linux as an incremental game
