I talk to people about web archiving a lot, and it feels like so many people think it’s not something *they* can do - they just have to wait and hope someone else saves a site for them. But *you* can save web history too! Here’s how! https://blog.mistys-internet.website/post/2026/10/29/if-you-love-a-website-back-it-up/
Fediverse find - happy Halloween!
In this day and age, the simple backstitch feels like the ultimate One Weird Trick Garmentmakers Don't Want You To Know.
Like, what do you mean I can grab literal pennies' worth of thread and a needle that cost maybe ten cents, turn my cycling glove inside out, sit down with it for five minutes, and all of a sudden the hole that had opened up at the thumb joint is better than when I got it??
Repair is so rad!! Tell your friends. If you don't known how to backstitch a seam back together, ask a friend who does, see if there's a repair cafe in your area, heck, look it up on YouTube. Every repair is one less piece of trash!
Support for another 68030 homebrew board is in the works for #NetBSD ... stay tuned!

*wanting to be a conspiracy theorist, but also a contrarian* I believe the Nestle corporation can secretly break Ed25519… but only Ed25519, their method doesn't generalize to other elliptic curve families. This is how they keep getting local governments to let them take away their water

managed to optimize the streaming ULZ encoder for #uxn (it was limiting size of literals which produced valid output, but wasn't optimal).
I wrote Unangband, an Angband variant some 17 years in the making, set in a world populated with a multitude of monsters, treasures and magic. It features some of the most interesting procedurally generated dungeons you’ll ever explore.
@benjojo just wanted to thank you for documenting your use of tape drives. used to use them about a million years ago and was wondering what the modern experience would be like
So yesterday I learned via several posts here that #NetBSD has a persistent live USB image for x86-64. Seems to work pretty much like you'd hope: find out right away if your hardware works, kick the tires for a bit without committing to a full install, try it on different machines if you have options. Log in as root, run startx, and it's like a fresh install. Only odd thing is an extra remote after resizing to use the whole USB stick.
It's like a throwback to Knoppix CDs of old. (But those weren't persistent; you can actually install packages and stuff on this and they stick around)

listening to these old records from high school is a special sort of feeling. my autumnal melancholy and depression of 2026 being overlaid with memories of intense high-school depression/melancholy/nostalgia. a very specific emotion.
becoming an expert in creating swords out of cardboard, tape, and paint.
Trying to buiild a package repo for all of my old, slow, and some cases passively cooled machines running #NetBSD, and ran across bob, a tool which automates all of generating a local repository given a list of packages, complete with dependency resolution, sandboxing, and picking which ones should be built on a ramdisk. Neat.
I have just enabled Vulkan support for #NetBSD/amd64-current.
Drop-In Time is a time where I hang out in a room at the library with a big table and a lot of chairs and help people with their technology problems for two and a half hours. These are their stories. It was cold today so I was warming up some water for tea and by the time I got upstairs at three past the hour there were four people waiting for me. Whoops!
Bob and Kathy had a Medicare prescription drug plan that wasn't going to be around next year so they needed help finding a new one.
