About half of my web access is dependent on archive.org now.
If archive.org goes down, decides to block me, or decides to join the walled garden of Cloudflare, half my web access will be instantly gone.
Should public libraries around the world take up digital archival duties?
@blacklight I noticed your search engine is sending users directly to #stackexchange, which should be avoided if possible. Is it trivial to add URL replacements like #AnonymousOverflow to your #searx configuration or does it require forking the code?
I just discovered #StackExchange was previously #Cloudflare-jailed in 2016¹. So SE evolved to wisely ditch CF for a number of years then in the past month or so regressed back into foolish exclusive greed.
The fix for people living in the free world is #AnonymousOverflow:
Just noticed it was announced in March:
Some “#FOSS” projects now require a “#GitHub Personal Access Token” as a precondition to downloading the software: https://github.com/wireapp/kalium#supported-platforms #WTF. Would someone please unjail #Kalium for #Wire by posting the code somewhere else? Suggested repos: https://git.sdf.org/humanacollaborator/humanacollabora/src/branch/master/forge_comparison.md
Out of curiosity, have any #Mastodon instances fully blocked mastodon.social in an effort to maintain a hard line against #centralization?
2017: “send it by fax… too sensitive for #email”. Rightly so (when dealing with normies at either end), kind of, but now that we’ve reached a point where real #POTS lines & real #fax machines are almost non-existent. What are the chances that a fax does not traverse #email now? 5%? 2022: fuck it, just send that sensitive doc by email without encryption.
git.sdf.org is suddenly #down or #torHostile (“502 Bad Gateway”) without warning.
Why isn’t this guy in the #fedi instead of Twitter? “After self-hosting my #email for twenty-three years I have thrown in the towel” https://cfenollosa.com/blog/after-self-hosting-my-email-for-twenty-three-years-i-have-thrown-in-the-towel-the-oligopoly-has-won.html
#MastodonBug: when I post something my client normally echos my post back to me, but not always. In cases where the client does not echo the msg back, I can still see that the msg posted by visiting my timeline on the web. So I thought it was a client-side bug. BUT, in those non-ack cases followers also do not get the post in their timeline. So it’s a #bug in the #Mastodon server.
#Mastodon needs to support incremental archive export fetches. If I want to request my archives on a periodic basis, it should not be the full archive every fetch. #MastodonBug
I recall on Twitter being able to copy the URL of a parent thread into a newly composed msg, and the original thread would be partially integrated (though the OP would still not be mentioned thus not see replies).
#Fedi folks- Often someone posts a good story with a shitty URL (e.g. medium instead of scribe.rip, guardian.com instead of guard*onion, CF instead of archive.org, etc). Instead of boosting, I compose a new msg with a proper URL. But this splits the thread & excludes the original poster from the new thread. Would #Mastodon be more useful if it had a thread-tying mechanism? #askFedi
A claim that email forwarding is “private by design” is made by #Cloudflare: http://web.archive.org/web/20220802214251/developers.cloudflare.com/email-routing/ CF has a habit of neglecting to count themselves when discussing access to sensitive data. Question: if I want to ensure that I do not send email to Cloudflare’s #email routing server, is it just an MX lookup? #askFedi
The min price for the data was $30k, so each user’s record was worth at least ½ a penny.
Of the 5.4 million Twitter users, it would be interesting to know how many of them were aware that Twitter abused their phone number but decided to keep their account anyway.
