Repeating my long-standing offer:

If you are self-hosting email and are having trouble delivering to big providers like Gmail, Outlook, etc - I'm ready and willing to help.

It IS possible. Many small, low volume senders like me routinely get through without being flagged as spam.

I have very strong opinions about unix ( Linux, and especially Redhat, isn't unix anymore. Just listen to Lennart. )

And no I will NOT back down. This is a holy war, one I enlisted in long ago. Promoted to officer, probably.

I will not back down.

It really wasn't rocket science to call this one.

I'd rather eat another ten hour outage bridge on a Friday evening with no sleep because a datacenter's power distribution panel caught fire than do another daily standup. Fuck "Scrum" and/or "Agile."

( Yes that electrical fire is an actual incident I worked through back in 2016. )

A post got out of hand and expanded into a Blog entry.

TL;DR: something is wrecking the web from underneath. People blame these scrapers on AI but I no longer think they are related.

Dude leading this bike ride ride screamed "HEY IT'S MIDNIGHT!" and held up his phone showing four zeros

Which reminded me that PostgreSQL accepts "allballs" as a valid time meaning Midnight.

Still giggling.

Using an LLM for a hobby project is baffling to me.

"In did in three days what normally takes weeks!"  Uh, why does that matter?

"With this new Anthropic footware I hiked the entire Appalachian Trail in three days!"

Dude you missed it. Not just the trail itself because you you went so fast you didn't see any detail - you missed the entire point of hiking it.

If, by happenstance, you live in Kentucky - please make the phone at McConnell's office in DC blow up off the hook with constant phone calls:

https://www.themirror.com/news/politics/mcconnell-aide-dismisses-continued-requests-1962792

The phone number is (202) 224-2541. Explicitly say foreign media is talking about his health and that's a problem.

Also, be polite to whomever answers. That person will almost certainly be a college age intern who might not agree with the Senator's politics - but needs the experience for their career. And thus agreed to be a buffer. Treat them nicely and they're more likely to not be a GOP member after graduation.

I made a post about #NetBSD a bit ago that managed to escape some of it's containment, and since then I'm up to four people who've tried it. Some successes, others who needed support and I did my best to route them appropriately.

Looks like at least one new full time user, possibly more.

I was also admonished that the post was "Not productive" because of it's snarky tone.

I suppose there's hack value in building such a hybrid and getting it to work, but I don't think that's a serious proposal for building the next iteration of trusted infrastructure.

Signed, a weird dude using Dell branded drives in an HP SAS shelf plugged into a Sun T2000 server, all mounted on a DEC PDP/11 rack.

I made it work but I wouldn't build something expecting five-nines reliability this way!

So Linus showed his entire ass ( again, if you've been paying attention in the last twenty years, but for some reason this one really got noticed ), and now I keep seeing people talking about building weird #NetBSD / Debian hybrids, how Devuan was trying that, and

You know you can just run NetBSD right? No need to loot it for replacement parts, it's a stable modern OS that works fine exactly as it is.

Putting the GNU userland on top of it will be a lot of work to catch up with what it already is, and carries the reward of having Richard Stallman's slime on everything.

I think a particularly bad early mistake of the web, as it exists now, was a category error.

HTTP and HTML were designed to move and display documents. It still does a pretty good job of that, too - when someone points out a well built website, it's typically a small library. Little books of text or images or audio, everything is stateless.

But people didn't want the web to be a library. They wanted to distribute applications. Javascript was born and slowly sent us all to hell.

I don't care which search engine you use, because, there are only three:

- Google ( which is problematic )
- Bing ( aka Microsoft, which is  problematic )
- Yandex ( Which is problematic )

There are others that aren't those, but explicitly state they don't crawl the entire internet .

If you have an exception to the above, please reply. I would LOVE to be proven wrong ... but odds are, I'll to upset you with the truth.

Haven't laughed this hard in a long time.

"Some customers may have experienced unscheduled collaborative compute with external parties. Under the terms of /tmp/TREATY.md, customers whose workloads ran on odd-numbered hosts were contractually protected from exfiltration, a fact General Counsel has asked us to stop describing as “a silver lining.” "

Definitely an accelerating trend in No-LLM policies in various open source projects.

The community isn't being overrun: it's being split. Open source software is at a fork in the road, one going stochastic LLM driven; another made by humans for humans. Open source software was always starved for development time, and it's going to get worse regardless which side you choose as developers pick sides.

I'm on the human side, if it's isn't obvious. I think it makes more sense, results in higher quality, AND is more likely to survive long term.

I worry, though. I prefer permissive BSD or MIT type licenses, and those have often been used to appropriate volunteer labor in pursuit of profit. And LLMs are going to accelerate this, as well as be fuel for the stochastic OSS faction.

There are difficult choices to make going forwards. I don't have answers.

Having the clarity to realize everything I've been saying/doing for quite a while now is ultimately downstream of one thing:

In my youth I got a taste of digitized utopia but instead rich assholes used computers to ruin the world.

Back to the Z80: I've plenty of wildly obsolete devices I can use to view the schematic of my custom enhancement of a wildly obsolete computer I intend to build with even more wildly obsolete construction methods.

Like my HP Envizex X Terminal.

This schematic looks like ass - I'm out of practice - but here we go: #RC2014 single stepper unit.

Interested in Redmine[1], has a lot of modules I find directly useful - repo browser that supports Subversion, Issue Tracker, and Wiki specifically. Seems to be actively developed and supported and has up to date packages in pkgsrc, a huge plus.

It's Ruby though. After hearing the drama about Ruby Central/Bundler, as well as DHH in particular, I don't want to take the time to deploy something and discover it's affiliated with people I want to avoid.

So Lazyweb: is Redmine safe / unaffilated from all that mess?

Look at this psychedelic mayhem. Just .. loooook. It's like Transport Tycoon got forced down a rabbit hole by the Large Hadron Collider.
