What are the most #radical kids' #books? I'm most interested in board books, because of my kid's age and destructiveness, but I'll accept any books for #children.

By radical I mean challenging "business as usual", such as capitalism and climate collapse, patriarchy and hierarchy, but there are so many aspects of the status quo that deserve to be questioned that I don't want to limit what "radical" means; interpret it as you will. It should piss off fascists, tho.

Are there any #COVID conscious children's books? We're especially interested in board books because of our baby's age and destructiveness, but I'll take anything.

What I hear from other parents is that there are a few from the early pandemic with outdated info like standing 6 feet apart and cloth masks, but nothing really relevant today.

Alternately, if you want your child to care about public health, what books might help?

@dillo It seems that you are opposed to using LLMs to develop Dillo, but I'm not seeing a clear official statement on your website or git repo. Could you please clarify whether you accept LLM contributions?

A popular location for LLM policies is in a CONTRIBUTING file, so it might be an opportunity to close this issue: https://bug.dillo-browser.org/72/

If you have an official policy against LLMs, then you could be added to the No AI list: https://noai.starlightnet.work/list.html

I can't tell if GrapheneOS is having a normal one because it seems they blocked me over pretty mild criticism of their social media presence: https://jawns.club/@skyfaller/115904946894724115

This seems to be one of the posts I was replying to, but the thread is broken, maybe GrapheneOS deleted their posts? https://ioc.exchange/@Lu_Tze/115904786973458776

I don't remember what GrapheneOS was saying, but it was likely a weird overreaction to mild criticism.

So warning: they will probably block you if you criticize them in this thread too.

In my efforts to escape Google, I'm considering signing up with Cape, "America's privacy-first mobile carrier", and buying a phone with GrapheneOS pre-installed from them. https://www.cape.co/blog/cape-supports-grapheneos

Has anyone done this? How is it going? Thanks to @Bender for mentioning Cape.

Cape supports the EFF and GrapheneOS, which seems good, but they also plug Proton, which is less good. It seems you can ignore the Proton promotion, though: https://www.cape.co/cape-and-proton

I haven't bought a Copper Charlie #induction #stove because they don't have an installing partner for my address yet, and I can't get it up the stairs. I've tried asking handymen to help and they've turned me down.

When I started this search there was no other battery induction #oven available, but now #Electra seems to be shipping: https://electra.com/

Does anyone have experience with the Electra?

This Reddit thread has a comment comparing them: https://www.reddit.com/r/inductioncooking/comments/1udl18y/comment/otfkeq4/

Did dinosaurs have a dawn chorus, the way modern birds do? Did the ankylosaurs chirp, the tyrannosaurs growl and boom, the hadrosaurs honk, every morning at first light?

I'm a parent with a 9-month old baby looking to chat with other parents. Can you recommend fedi accounts of parents with younger children who talk about parenting? (There may be many silent parents on here.)

Bonus points if they ride bikes / avoid cars, are passionate about climate justice, are COVID conscious / interested in public health, or concerned about LLMs & surveillance capitalism (all relatively common on fedi no doubt, despite conditions in the outside world).

Hi Jawns, Jawns.club is low on funds and needs your help: https://opencollective.com/jawnsclub/updates/jawns-club-low-on-money-again

TL;DR help we need:

* donations (obviously)
* mods to help run Jawns.club (or at least moderate it)
* feedback on our onboarding process for new members (or lack thereof), i.e. what went well or poorly for you when you first joined Jawns.club?

Should this turtleneck be tucked into my pants? I don't know how fashion works.

Any other suggestions or constructive criticism of my clothing choices are also welcome.

Do you have any experience with the Copper Charlie stove? It's an #induction stove with a battery, which enables it to operate during a power outage, work on 120V without upgrading your wiring to 240v, doesn't buzz like AC induction cooktops because it runs on DC, etc. Has anyone seen it in the wild?

We're considering buying one after years of making do with a cheap portable induction cooktop.

I think often about how weird it is for fascists to target trans kids in competitive sports, when there's only like two of them. I know there's lots of reasons, like Republicans being pedophiles who want to look at and touch children's genitals, but it still feels like something from a random roll table to me, like it couldn't possibly be worth the effort in the real world. That's the feeling I want to capture.

> Conservatism consists of exactly one proposition, to wit: There must be in-groups whom the law protects but does not bind, alongside out-groups whom the law binds but does not protect.

I want to make a roll table for quickly generating conservative / fascist NPCs, so I need in-groups they wish to protect from consequences and out-groups they wish to persecute. Can you suggest some?

Setting is a near-future post-apocalyptic Philly, with solarpunk organizers trying to rebuild after fascism.

Suppose you want to give a child a computer that is 100% #offline, no Internet at all. What is the ideal "baby's first computer"? What is the most empowering platform for them to learn about #computers and #programming?

A standard modern Linux machine that simply has no Internet? (what distro still works well offline?) A #retrocomputing relic? Some weird hardware specifically designed for #children, like the dear departed One Laptop Per Child?

I especially want to keep my child away from LLMs.

Does anyone have experience plowing snow using a bicycle? The best source of inspiration I've found is this article, but it doesn't have detailed build instructions: https://flatbike.com/blogs/cyclist/snow-plow-bike

I have a frontloader cargo bike that seems like it would be ideal to me, the Riese and Müller Load4 75 Vario: https://www.cyclingelectric.com/reviews/riese-and-muller-load4-75-vario-reviewed

But I imagine lowering and raising a plow to be mechanically complex and finicky, and I would love tips.

Has anyone tried making a PAPR or HEPA stroller? A few people have mentioned the concept but the only source I've found is this one paper: https://www.researchsquare.com/article/rs-2430680/v1

I'd love practical tips. Right now I can't go into stores with my baby because she can't mask, having the ability to wheel her inside would greatly expand what I can do while caring for my child. Also useful during wildfire smoke.

Can anyone recommend resources for learning to use an abacus? Physical media preferred, but websites are also ok. English language please.

I have a Chinese-style (suanpan) and two Japanese-style (soroban) abacuses. I'm especially interested in advanced techniques that you would need if you were replacing your calculator with an abacus.

Are there other abacus types useful for specific calculations?

I find the Lee Kai-chen Abacus fascinating: http://totton.idirect.com/abacus/Lee/

I've had "Do You Hear the People Sing?" from Les Misérables stuck in my head for multiple days now. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Do_You_Hear_the_People_Sing%3F

Could you please recommend the most subversive and revolutionary songs you know? Must be catchy in order to defeat Les Miz.

I'm already familiar with Rage Against the Machine's catalog, so if you feel compelled to mention a RATM song, please recommend another song first ;-)

What is the minimum viable:

* museum
* archive
* library

I feel most librarians would not consider a Little Free Library to be a true library, that's just a bookshelf! (Correct me if I'm wrong.) But what is the simplest library using the least resources that would be a meaningful library?

Can a private collection of artifacts become a museum simply by opening access to the public?
