Now it’s time to hold Democrats’ feet to the fire. They must do what is necessary. No “reaching across the aisle,” no avoiding impeachment hearings, no sitting on their asses. We fucking elected them. Now they work for us. Do not let them forget it. ✊🏻
The more I think about it, the more this makes me angry.
I have had jobs with leadership who treat people like this. It damages your health (mental, physical, and emotional).
And in a market like ours, I suspect there are a lot of people at Proton who have pits in their stomachs. They’re expressing their pain to their partners, or kids, or friends. Feeling trapped.
This is what emotional abuse, toxic masculinity, and tech-bro capitalism look like. I’m tired of people thinking ethics and technology aren’t intersectional. They are.
Fuck Andy Yen, and fuck @protonprivacy.

Imagine trusting your privacy with a company who favors speed over integrity.
A @protonprivacy employee cautioned against releasing new code that wasn’t properly tested. Andy Yen responded to all Proton employees:
“That’s bullshit and loser thinking. Of course it’s possible to be fast and secure. Stop thinking always of how to be slower, and focus more on how to be faster. Only losers think like that. Stop lovingly handcrafting all our code and use AI more.”
Some of us keep warning folks to avoid Proton. Unfortunately, others, like trusted source @privacyguides, ignore the red flags and recommend it anyway. If you use Proton, you’re at risk.

What we’re up against in the U.S. during this election.
Yesterday:
1. Meta closed the No Kings accounts on the day of the protest. Restored them later, saying “our bad.” But did not restore admin privileges.
2. We learned that millions of people had no idea about the protests because Meta suppressed posts about it.
3. Bluesky closed the @DemocracyMattersALot account for “unusual activity.” (No idea if it has been restored.)
And for months we’ve been watching the fascists do everything in their power to restrict voting rights.
The billionaires know they’re the minority. Not economically (which is obvious) but ethically. Otherwise they wouldn’t be working so hard to stop democracy.
I wanna believe most Americans are good people. We’re fighting for what’s right. But our enemy has massive resources and control. That what we need to quell.
Keep fighting. Stay vigilant. And for fuck’s sake, vote!
Hello, everyone! 👋🏻
I hope you’re having a good Friday night. Or Saturday morning. Or whatever the fuck it is where you are when you’re reading this.
I’ve had a lot of whiskey because it brings me joy. This is a photo of me before I was drinking, while I was hanging with the dog we’re “fostering.” He was keeping me company at work. As dogs do.
Also, I put quotes around fostering because we don’t really foster anything. We keep people and animals. Our family is ever growing. 🤷🏻♂️

Fuck mass surveillance. Fuck cops and their arrogance. Thankfully one judge did the right thing to combat ALPRs like Flock. But not all judges will.
Automatic license plate readers have to go. I applaud all of the brave folks showing up at local government meetings to voice their opposition. We must keep up the fight.
If we live in a police state, we don’t live in a free Democracy.

Lately I’ve really been considering moving from macOS to Linux. But y’all may not know how scary and chaotic that is. I assume I’m not alone.
Anyone have good stories making this transition?
I’ve been designing and coding for 30 years. THREE fucking decades. On Apple computers that entire time. And I have my family set-up on them. We share apps and stuff.
Moving to Linux would be a wild ride. Even though it’s the one place in my life where I’m contributing to big tech. It feels like the last holdout.
For an ADHD person like me, this is filling me with blend of excitement and anxiety.
I’m loving Linux on my old MacBook. But I might want some new hardware. Like a laptop from @frameworkcomputer. Their hardware is primo.
I’d love any/all advice, stories, etc.
So…this funny thing happened a while back. Which prompted me to do something strange. Which worked. At least so far as it matters to me.

Honestly, I don’t even care about SEO. But I care about people encroaching on my space for the sake of capitalism. Plus, it presented me with an opportunity to design something in the vein of Swiss design or Mid-Century Modern. For funsies.
I know. Something’s wrong with me. I’m okay with that.

It’s interesting that people who support age verification have to ask what the problem is. As if it was a big mystery.
Asking people to reveal their personally identification so they can use the internet isn’t a problem that should need to be explained. But since you asked…
1. Our data can not be protected online. Especially by every random person who has the means to buy a domain and pay for hosting.
2. Forcing identification is a barrier for many people. That’s exclusion. And in many cases ableism.
3. Age verification won’t keep kids from using technology. If their parents are that disconnected, they’ll help them through the gates and move on. Restricting access creates a hurdle, not an impasse.
4. Age verification puts the onus on people using the web instead of the people make parts of it horrible. We are victims of nefarious systems. We are not the problem. The systems are. That should be the focus of solutions.
Hello, everyone. I hope you’re doing rad. 👋🏻
Whoa. @libreoffice unleashes “no AI as a feature” and breaks download records.
“In one week, the installer was downloaded more than 1 million times — not counting updates via Linux distribution repositories.”
Great work, LibreOffice team! 👏🏻

IMPORTANT MASTODON PASSWORD SECURITY/PRIVACY ISSUE…
----
For everyone:
If you are using the same password for Mastodon that you use anywhere else, CHANGE YOUR PASSWORD NOW.
A hacker is stealing accounts using something called “credential stuffing.” This means they use email/password combinations stolen from other sites.
You can check if your email is in a data breach elsewhere:
Create a new strong password:
1. 12+ characters
2. Capital/lowercase letters
3. At least one special character
For admins:
The hacker is using the same unique user agent.
Go-http-client/1.1
We’re seeing a pattern of IPs, but they’re from varying ISPs. They’re also not changing the account emails.

Do you wanna be an alt-text rockstar? I got you.
I just published a comprehensive guide on the when, what, and how of image descriptions. There are sections for design/development practitioners and social media posters alike.
So read up, then get your alt-text on.

Two ways to write the same headline.
Hate propaganda is not “rage bait,” and egregiously sugar coating the definition of a nazi is not a journalism.

Friends on toot.community, your server is shutting down in two months. If you need help or advice, let me know. I’m happy to help anyone who needs it.
Their admin said only 90 accounts out of about 1,500 (active) have migrated. It would be super sad to see folks disappear.

Discovered while doing ethnographic research for a public library district. I was touring one of their branches when this caught my attention.
It’s genius. Smartest solution I’ve seen for this common problem.
Librarians could save the world if we’d let them. 😉
August is Black Business Month. Here’s a great opportunity to support a Black-owned business…
Do you use Goodreads? If so, you can migrate to @thestorygraph. You can even import all of your Goodreads data.
Nadia Odunayo is the founder and sole developer. Together with her small team, they’re making a great product that’s slowly improving over time.
So go support Nadia and co. instead of a fascist billionaire.

Here’s something that will blow your mind. Most U.S. water systems have internet-based logic controllers. And a large number of them use NO PASSWORDS OR DEFAULT PASSWORDS.
Yeah. Public water systems ready for the hacking. Which came to light because there are signs of attacks. Enough of them that CISA had to issue a warning to all water facilities, recommending they disconnect them or actually use a fucking password.
CNN cites about 30 water systems were attacked this week, with six other states having reported related cyber incidents. A security expert in the water sector said “the scale and coordination of the recent cyberattacks targeting Minnesota water suppliers is unprecedented.”
