Monty's random thought of the day. When it comes to civilian aircraft, are there any new aircraft being built at all? Every time I watch a pilots youtube channel or hear about what aircraft pilots are flying, and this includes airliners, it seems that the newest aircraft I hear about is anywhere from 15 years old and older! So like if I were a pilot, and wanted say a new Cessna or Cerus aircraft, or even a new jet, could I get one? I mean I can't exactly go down to the local auto mall and see the latest aircraft builds, so I was just wondering if any pilots ever fly brand new aircraft that's like 2 years or less old?

Nerdy question for linux users. It's easy enough to find the last modified time of a file, but is there a way to find out when a file was first created on a linux system, much like, the created date on a windows file system? Hope that makes sense.

So it seems Apple has effectively put a watermark in place when one dictates now? I don't know if this was introduced in 27.2 or 27 in general, but it certainly exists in 27.2. Basically if you are dictating, and you stop, a period punctuation is inserted, whether you want one there or not. This makes editing dictated text rediculously annoying, because now you have to fish out periods you never wanted there in the first place! If I end a dictation with no punctuation, because I stop in the middle of a sentence to check it or whatever, don't assume I want a punctuation there, period or otherwise! And so far as I know currently, there is no way to disable this annoying behavior? Feel free to correct me if I'm wrong. Who comes up with this useless crap, or now days I guess I should say What comes up with this useless crap?

Being the networking nerd that I am, I wanted to try and investigate what the hell could be going on to cause such slow speeds on such a good connection. I discovered in the places where I could do traces, that the traffic destined for my friends Internet connection was almost always being routed through something called GTT.net. I can't help but wonder if that particular network is having some serious capacity issues. Sometimes it's so easy for us to blame our own Internet provider for any slowdowns we may encounter, when the problem in fact could be a network in between our source, destination and ourselves, and sadly, we have no control over that, though sometimes I wish we did.

The Internet as a whole can sure be a strange beast sometimes. I have a friend in Ohio who has gigabit symmetric AT&T fiber. His uploads are awesome and I'd love to have that kind of upload in my apartment complex. But his download speeds don't make any sense, but I don't think it's AT&T's fault. My friend also has servers in various locations, the closest to him of which is in Chicago. When I download one of my test files from that Chicago server, I get a blazing fast Speed of about 30 megabits per second, roughly 3 percent of his download potential. But it gets odder still. If I download a file from my Backblaze B2 storage, hosted in California, to my friend's home file server in Ohio, I can easily sustain over 300 megabits, around 30 percent of his download. But here's the oddest one. My friend has a dedicated server in Texas, on a multi gigabit uplink to the internet, and when I download data from there to Ohio, I achieve a download speed of just 4 megabits per second! That's just 0.4 percent of what my friend should be able to achieve. Hell, I can upload faster than that on an LTE connection!

Currently listening to Halloweek which is Halloween related content on HKC Radio. Currently the story Room 1408 by Steven King is on the air. Pretty good content. :) Otherwise just trying to figure out some things and hanging out. World series game 3 is this evening.

With all the zero day issues with PHP currently going on, I have a legit question, as someone who is in no way a security or programming expert. If you execute code via the web, which I assume is what a remote code execution vulnerability basically is, how would you know if your code executed? Would you literally see a shell in your web browser instead of like an error page. Or would you have to log on to an SSH server of the target you are attacking after you submit a malformed HTTP request or something like that? I'm more a networking nerd, programming stuff overloads my brain, but whenever I hear of issues like this, especially severe ones that are so severe, I've already had 2 of my server providers inform me about them, I just wonder how that all works. I don't run PHP on any of my resources, but I just wonder how a component of a server that's meant to serve content and files, can turn into a way for you to access the whole system. A separate service does that, so I just wonder.

A thought to ponder. Since you can get live TV over the internet now, with the likes of youtube TV and others, and since the price is basically the same now, whether you use streaming or old school cable TV, I have to wonder, why don't the cable providers just give all available RF spectrum to internet services, and drop cable channels entirely. Much like how we no longer use copper landlines in most cases, shouldn't the dedicated cable channel be dropped in favor of internet delivery, much like how virtually all telephone communications have gone VOIP internet based?

For a while, I actually thought that my Digital Ocean server had a problem, and wasn't getting Kernel updates at all, as every time I'd check for updates, I'd never see Kernel updates, even when I'd see other package updates. It never occured to me to reboot the darn thing to see what kernel would load, so I literally ran that box with a Kernel from back in May, when I could've been current the whole time! :)

For most of my servers that I maintain, when there are kernel updates to be had, I have to manually perform the update. But on one particular box I have with Digital Ocean, it seems that kernel updates are somehow automatically being downloaded and installed, so that all I need to do is the required reboot to put the new kernel in to effect. The server doesn't tell me a new kernel is ready or anything like that, but when I update my other boxes manually and see a new kernel for my OS is available, I manually update those systems and do the reboot. But then I'll go to the digital Ocean box, which runs the same OS as my other boxes, and it may tell me packages are available to upgrade, or like today it may say all packages are up to date, yet I know that can't be true, because I'm still running the older kernel version. Yet I reboot that box, and oh look, I'm magically running the newest kernel now! How the hell did it do that? All my other boxes, I manually perform an update check, see there's a new kernel, and I manually install said new kernel and any other updates there may be. Yet on this one box at Digital Ocean, ever since I upgraded it to Debian 13, it's magically putting the new kernel into place? I'm not complaining, I just find it interesting that the Digital Ocean box is the only one doing this.

I've always believed, and still believe, that the internet has incredible potential, especially when it comes to watching or listening to multimedia content from all over the globe. You should, in my view, be able to watch or listen to any TV show or documentary, or any radio station or TV station or program you wish, regardless of where in the world you are, or wherever the content originates. However, for whatever crazy reason, many if not all media companies, love to restrict their program to their own geographic area, despite distributing on a global platform called the internet! Do they not realize they'd get even more viewership if they wouldn't be so darn restrictive? Why do they feel the need to do this? Well anyway, I recently came across a documentary I wanted to watch from the CBC in Canada that was shared by a fellow Canadian. Only one problem. When I went to watch it, I got the message that the uploader didn't allow viewing in my country! Excuse me, but I don't believe content should be restricted, so I'm going to find a way to watch this thing, since I was interested in it. Fortunately for me, thanks to a friend in Canada, I have access to a private Canadian VPN, that isn't hosted at a data center, since that's another way greedy media companies are not allowing users in other areas to enjoy content, blocking whole datacenters even if they are in the desired country of orgin, from watching content. Anyway, thanks to my friends VPN, I did find the content, and captured it for offline use! Does anyone want the CBC documentary Everyone is Lying to you for Money? I have it in non-described audio, and yes I even have video! Take that you greedy media corporation!

I'm taking a small trip down memory Lane, as although I don't have archives of my previous Internet radio shows prior to 2019, I do have archives of some of my ham radio recordings from back in the mid to late 2000s thanks to me, uploading them to archive.org. I believe I may also even have some recordings I made at conventions. I attended in 2010 and 2011. It is so awesome to be able to relive these moments that feel like yesterday but we're already in some cases nearly 20 years ago, as the recording I'm listening to now is a trip I made to a communication site called Sunset Ridge with a friend back in April 2007. Just wow.

I just want to point out, that leaders in the United States are obviously cowards. Why are we still dealing with mass shootings again and again and again in this country? And why are we having to deal with yet another school shooting, an elementary school shooting at that? We've been here before, surely everyone hasn't forgotten Sandy Hook elementary from 2012? For those that may be unaware, yesterday in the central Oregon community of Bend, Oregon, a place I actually know exactly where it is, as I have friends that live in the area, a 16 year-old maniac forced his way through into an elementary school, killing children and a teacher. He was subsequently killed by a fellow armed bystander, but God do I have questions. Like what the hell was this 16 year-old doing at an elementary school in the first place? Do people of this country, no matter their age, literally find it fun to kill others just for the hell of it? I know life sucks, and no one does anything for the consumer and the people anymore, but God there is got to be a better way. Mass shootings are horrible enough on their own, and I can name so many just off the top of my head it's not funny, but when you include children among the groups of people you are killing, that's a whole new level of evil, one that needs to be understood I think. Why does this keep happening? Will we ever be able to do anything about it? Ever? And here's the irony, in this country it seems like a whole lot of people love to kill each other, yet a planned execution in Tennessee failed spectacularly recently. I don't know what to think anymore.

For the price that someone pays for NFL Sunday ticket on YouTube, you'd think you'd have the ability to not only watch games live, but also watch them unedited, on demand if you'd like. This does not appear to be the case, even though to my knowledge among the major sports leagues, and their seasonal package offerings, you pay more for NFL Sunday ticket, than anything else, at least with MLB extra innings you can rewatch in their entirety any game of the season. Why on earth does NFL Sunday ticket cost so much when you can't even do that? Thank goodness I have NFL Sunday ticket through my Verizon Home Internet, because otherwise I'm not sure how it would be worth paying for. Charging over $350 just to watch content live only? Good heavens these corporations need to stop being so greedy! There needs to be a cap on this corporate greed nonsense, and I better stop there. :)

Here is a video about 20 forgotten ways Americans recorded music over the generations. As someone who grew up in the cassette tape era, and as a result grew to love to want to preserve not just music but any kind of historical or news content as well, this is a fascinating look at some of the ways we've preserved stuff over the decades. https://youtu.be/DhWYX45mypk

Since it seems more than half of the Wev these days is powered by Cloudflare. I wonder, how does that work from a technical perspective? In other words, when you go to a domain website, that is powered by Cloudflare, does Cloudflare immediately contact the originating Web server before then serving the site to you? I'm guessing it would have to do it that way, but was just curious. And why do so many businesses and people host websites through Cloudflare instead of their own infrastructure directly? Again just curious.

Well darn. I truly was hoping I could grab a collection from archive.org, and possibly bring back memories as a result, but alas, it wasn't meant to be. And since my attempt at grabbing this content was unsuccessful, I'll say what I wanted to do. I wanted to grab the complete website capture from the ancient treasure Trove known as QAudio, which is, or at least was, on archive.org in 7 parts. According to the data on this collection, it's 289 GB in size. I was hoping to dig through this collection to find some postings of certain things, and possibly bring back memories of stuff I'd forgotten about that was posted there back in the day. However, it mentions the data is access restricted, and even logging into my archive.org account, something I literally haven't done in over 15 years, I still can't access the data. Here is the web page on archive.org where you can read about the data that apparently noone can access anymore. :( https://archive.org/details/archiveteam-qaudio-archive?tab=collection

I have a couple of things I want to do on archive.org, but I haven't visited the site in quite some time, and can't figure out how to do anything there currently. There are actually 2 separate projects I want to do that are unrelated. One involves the wayback machine where I want to see if I can view a certain section of a website from around April 2017, or as close to that time period as the Wayback machine will let me get. The other thing I want to do, is download an entire collection of content, and then dig through it to see if I can find some stuff possibly contained within the collection, but it says something about access restricted, so not sure how to resolve that, and the collection I'm trying to grab is around 289 GB in size according to the data on it. So how do I grab this collection? And regarding the portion of website I'm trying to view on wayback machine, I only see a calendar that seems to have nothing to click on to indicate a snapshot of the site to browse. So how do I access specific snapshots of a website?

Recently, as in within the last week, Microsoft released their latest major update to Windows 11. One of the odd things about Microsoft that I've never understood, is why they make it so hard to download the latest windows 11 .iso image. Once you tell it what language you want, you get a link that's only good for 24 hours from time of creation, so if you need to re-download the .iso at a later time, you must repeat the process of finding the download page in the first place, then going through the steps to obtain a link. Why not just do what pretty much all major linux distros do, and provide permanent links to the .isos? Well if anyone wants the U.s. English X64 edition of Windows 11 26H2, I've put the .iso up at one of my object storage locations. Feel free to grab it at https://s3.us-west-001.backblazeb2.com/kd6cae1/Windows11_Client_x64_en-us_26300_9457.iso

There is a new Teamtalk version 5.23 just released. I've found that downloading from the bearware site can be a bit slow, as I never get more than about 320 kilobytes per second from that site, and in 2026, that's a bit slow. So even though the program package is about 53MB in size, I've put it on my Los Angeles Racknerd server, where it'll hopefully be a faster download for U.S. people. I uploaded it on my 40 megabit upload link in about 12 seconds at 4.7 megabytes per second! If anyone wants this, grab it at https://racknerd.wroe698.com/TeamTalk_v5.23_Setup.exe and happy chatting.
