Here's another fascinating (for me, at least! :blobfoxnerd: ) analysis on the tension between two clocks / bottlenecks:
1. How long do developers building AI #dataCenters need to wait in the queue to power a newly built data center? (A: in the US, 6-10 years)
2. What's the useful life of the chips being used in these data centers? (A: Meta, for instance, says 5.5y on its depreciation schedules. Debatable.)
It features analysis from #michaelBurry (made famous in The Big Short)

Next, hat tip to @msb for sharing this earlier today:

❝This is not a software business that happens to own servers. It is a real estate business that happens to compute.❞
❝This is precisely why the analogy is 2008, not 2000. AI capital expenditure is not a capital budget. It is a loan book.❞

I've become fascinated learning more about how the current AI bubble will pop, and what that'll look like.
First up, we have an entertaining historical perspective on bubbles. The thesis here is that much of the "pro AI" vs. "anti AI" discourse may be asking the wrong questions; focusing on the demand side rather than the supply side.

Another fantastic read from @pluralistic
❝They conclude that there's a community-member's "trilemma": a set of three priorities that can never be fully satisfied by any group. The trilemma consists of users' need to find:
a) A community of like-minded people;
b) Useful information; and
c) The largest possible audience.❞

Many, myself included, have only a dim sense of the absurd and impossible set of hoops immigrants to the US are expected to jump through immigrating “the right way”

If you don’t know, the Bechdel test is the is a measure of the representation of women in film and other fiction. The test asks whether a work features at least two women who have a conversation about something other than a man.
1/2 Very much enjoying the Bechdel Cast LIVE on the topic of the Star Wars prequels.
Here is EVERY TIME WOMEN INTERACT in the Star Wars prequels (it’s 2.5 minutes long)

Live podcast recording, CW, includes Obi Wan + Darth Maul erotic fan fiction 😆
And here, dear reader, is Marcia Lucas, George Lucas’s ex-wife, describing her reaction to The Phantom Menace (I learned of this from the podcast):
❝George is, in his heart and soul, a good guy and a talented filmmaker. I wish he would’ve kept directing [other kinds of] movies. But when I went to see Episode I — I had a friend who worked at ILM, who took me as a guest to a preview — I cried. I cried because I didn’t think it was very good. And I thought he had such a rich vein to mine, a rich palette to tell stories with. He had all those characters. I thought it was weird that the story was about this little boy who looked like he was six years old, but then later on he’s supposed to get with this princess who looked like she was twenty years old. There were things I didn’t like about the casting, and things I didn’t like about the story…it was a lot of eye candy. ❞
Hey Fedi!
We ARE the algorithm. But that also means it can take a little extra work to get the feed that works for you.
How do YOU 🫵 curate your feed? How do you use lists?
Here's my algorithm:
Someone posts something cool? Follow 'em.
Someone posts something EXTREMELY COOL (or I've seen their cool content before)?
They get added to my ⭐️ Faves list.
Then, in the Advanced Web Interface (Ala Tweetdeck, see 2nd link below), I've got:
1. ⭐️ Faves. 🔘Hide these posts from Home. Also, show me replies IF someone it's a reply to someone else also in my Faves list.
2. 🏠 Home: folk I follow who aren't in ⭐️ Faves
3.👋 # introduction (to welcome, follow, and boost interesting new folk!)
As always, don't sleep on @FediTips 's excellent guides; here's the one on using Lists:

Hi, All!
I wonder if you would be willing to share any insights or experiences you might have navigating the following (boosts appreciated)
1. #Codependence / enmeshment within a romantic partnership and the resulting loss of self / self knowledge / being in touch with your own desires
2. Navigating partnership in which one person is dealing with chronic #disability
Thanks!

My article, “Free Yourself From The Algorithm: On Fediverse” was just published in the Spring edition of Slingshot! I'm in print, bay-bee 📰

I don't think there's any newsletter I'm happier to receive than @pluralistic 's Plura List. He pulls no punches.
In the aftermath of #Trump shutting down the National Labor Relations Board, Docotorow writes:
«When unions are outlawed, only outlaws will have unions. Unions don't owe their existence to labor laws that protect organizing activities. Rather, labor laws exist because once-illegal unions were formed in the teeth of violent suppression, and those unions demanded – and got – labor law.»
[...]
«Trump is playing Grinch here – he's descended upon Whoville to take all the Christmas decorations, in the belief that these are the source of Christmas. But the Grinch was wrong (and so is Trump): Christmas was in the heart of the Whos, and the tinsel and baubles were the expression of that Christmas spirit. Likewise, labor rights come from labor organizing, not the other way around.»

👋 New server, who dis!?
Migrating because I'm not keen on staying on a server in the 🇺🇸.
I'm a software engineer in North Carolina, #synth fanatic, and a father of a five-year-old.
Pic is a scene I was lucky enough to witness this morning.
Now hiring: Garden Hermit
Compensation:
> If and only if the hermit fulfilled the terms of his contract, living in solitary contemplation without stepping foot outside of the estate for seven years, he would be rewarded with £500 to £700 (around $95,000 to $130,000 today).*
Was reminded of the role via the always-excellent, pro-labor history podcast for kids, “Forever Ago” (still interesting and listenable for adults, imo)

Hi Fedi!
I tutor an #iOS + #macOS developer, Tyler Sheft, and he just released a new totally-free zero-ads app!
🙏 Would love your help boosting :goose_honk: to gather users + feedback, please and thank you!
This is an app I dreamt up to help capture #musicProduction ideas that come to me, but it’s intended to be flexible in a variety of use-cases, from note-taking to flash cards.
He’s got a whole suite of apps, mostly #OSS (link at bottom), but I’m particularly keen on getting users + feedback on his latest release:
https://apps.apple.com/us/app/flexideck/id6701985663
Minimum requirements: macOS 14, or iOS 17. Zero data collected by the developer.
Tyler is legally blind, and his apps aim to be #VoiceOver accessible.
Any feedback and feature requests would be oh-so-helpful; you can send feedback to me here on Mastodon, or make a GitHub issue:
https://github.com/TechWithTyler/
