This weekend is the Fediverse Book Fair, a virtual book fair open to everyone on the fediverse.

This weekend, authors and publishers are encouraged to post about their books, or related subjects like research, with the #FediBookFair hashtag.

Readers can watch or follow the hashtag to find books to buy, and interesting authors that they may wish to follow.

If you don't want to see these posts, please filter the hashtag.

The excellent @FediTips has articles explaining how to follow or filter hashtags.

There is more information about the fair at https://authorhelp.uk/fedibookfair/

Enjoy the fair!

We've recently set up a service called the Indie Ad Network, or IAN for short. The idea is that authors can display ads for each other's books, with no popups, cookies, tracking, data harvesting, or all the other things that make most online ads awful.

Just a picture of the book and a link to where to buy it.

And it's all free.

You can see an example of an advert at the bottom of the sidebar on Robin's author website (https://russellphillips.uk).

Any self-published or small press author can submit a book ad and we'll run it for six months. If you're also showing our ads, your ad will run indefinitely.

You can add a book to be advertised (one per author name, for now) here: https://ian.authorhelp.uk/info/submit/

If you have a website and you'd like to display adverts for other author's books, go here: https://ian.authorhelp.uk/info/installation/

The service is currently in a limited beta. Authors of the Fediverse are welcome to join, but we'll close the forms if it gets too busy.

Last month, some authors were concerned at the news that Amazon would start to allow ebook buyers to download ebooks in ePub or PDF format if DRM was not enabled. Some authors that hadn't used DRM in the past considered enabling it to prevent these downloads.

The feature was rolled out recently, so I tried downloading three books (one of mine, and two traditionally published books) that don't have DRM.

When looking at my purchased books in the digital content area, some books had a "Download available in additional formats" note in the listing, and they had a "Download EPUB/PDF" option under "More actions".

On the books that I tried, clicking that option downloaded a zip file with a 72-character long file name starting "ebook-content." and a .zip extension. Examining the zip file, it's an ePub with a .zip extension. So changing the extension from .zip to .epub allows me to view it in an ebook reader.

No sign of a PDF in any of these cases.

I'm not impressed at how Amazon have implemented this change, but I still see no reason to enable DRM on any of my books.

Our principles are important to us. We have a published statement of principles, and will not work with books that go against it: https://authorhelp.uk/statement-of-principles/

Our posts will mostly be links to articles that are likely to be of interest to authors, especially #IndieAuthors.
