It seems the Linux community is once again in the middle of a sort of political battlefield. The left vs the right. Omarchy vs… I don’t know … the left.
I’m tired of it. I don’t like the right and I don’t like the left. I’m tired of being in the middle and taking shit from both sides.
I don’t care about anyone’s political views. I just want my system working and so far between the two of them are making Linux more divisive. (1/2)
I suppose this is the month I’ll be moving to BSD..I don’t want to be part of another drama war and Linux is becoming a mess in itself with so many AI discourse, political division, unnecessary rewrites and over engineered decisions… (2/2)
I only know of a couple of cases where people have been very close to it. But not fully. Which is sad.
I would lie to attempt it. But failure for me means putting my family in jeopardy, so there is that… (2/2)
I am in constant struggle between my moral and what needs to be done to survive as an artist.
I believe in the principles of openness and shared content. And this I like the ideas behind licenses like Creative Commons and GPL.
But at the same time I akwnoledge the need of proper compensation for an effort.
At this point the licenses and the compensation don’t match or don’t have a middle ground in which the artist or programmer can survive while staying true to both sides. (1/2)
1. The price: while I own a license of CSP 1.13, if I want to get the latest features I need a new license. This means either get subscription (not gonna happen) or paying again for the EX version which is the one with the features I need. Can’t say is cheap
2. The convenience: tied to then new licenses is the fact that I would only be allowed to use it in 1 computer. It turns out I have 2 an d would like to be able to switch between them as needed. (2/3)
I made the big mistake of thinking on moving to Clip Stuio Paint.
Most mangakas in Japan use it and is very suited for the industry in this country. So I was tempted, friends that work professionally here gave me the reasons and I listened.
I couldn’t stand it for more than 1 day and here are the reasons. (1/3)
What is this... 2GB pdf file?
I got this comics bundle and just downloaded the first one... 2GB!!!
I mean, I want high quality but 2GB is ridiculous!
I think it’s time to start checking my next Linux hop. There is a restriction which will really limit the options.
My next Linux install must support Xorg/Xlibre (hopefully the second)
Extra points if it doesn’t use systemd (but not mandatory)
I’ll keep this post pinned to add updates on my findings.
It seems like not a month goes by without any scandal in the open source world.
Now it seems that forking a project is also a violation of a code of conduct.
I of course want Wayland to work. I really do, but now that Xorg seem to be dead a fork is what some of us may need to keep on working on Linux. Xlibre seems to be the right option here and yet it seems it’s being boycotted by the FreeDesktop people.
Looks like I’ll have to move back to Windows.
It was a nice surprise to find out that @davidrevoy was part of the creative team that made the graphic assets for Tales of the Orient and (by Green Sauce games).
I played that game some years ago and loved it (yeah I’m a casual gamer like that)
Only now I realize David’s touch in the art of the game. 😅
Great work. Good graphics and good game
Sometimes I wonder why I choose the paths I choose.
I have quite a lot of experience both in the proprietary software and free software spaces both as a software developer and as an artists.
In both cases the experience is similar: if you stick to proprietary software, things are going to be easy, really easy if you don’t steer away from the designed path. (1/5)
On the other hand Free software experience is like: you will have a rough time for sure, but you will get the freedom to move in any direction you want.
The funny thing is most of the time (i would dare to say 99% of the time) we don’t really need to move in different directions. (2/5)
The lack of indexed mode in Krita is a real problem for manga production and I wish there was an easy way to work around this.
So far I see 3 options for me to try to keep producing manga pages
1. Move the screen tone process to Gimp entirely. This is less than ideal as Gimp lacks many of the features Krita has and brushes would be very limited here but I may need to give it a try to have a better sense of gimp’s capabilities. (2/4)
I think I’ve hit a limitation in my current setup for manga production.
So far I’ve been using #krita for drawing and Gimp for post processing.
I use Krita’s Halftone filter to generate the screentones and Gimp is mostly used to change image mode to indexed (black and white only)
The problem is with gradients. I don’t usually use gradients. But it seems that applying the halftone filter to a gradient doesn’t really work that well. (1/4)
