It’s officially been over 3 years since I’ve started on Mastodon. Rather then talk about what’s so great I figured I’d just list stuff I haven’t seen:
- I haven’t had any posts from people I don’t follow
- I haven’t been served ads for items I’ve spoke about near my phone or for that matter any ads at all
- I haven’t been served random articles similar to one article I clicked on out of curiosity like two years ago
- I haven’t been asked to upgrade or subscribe to anything
- I haven’t had AI shoved down my throat or have had AI slop dumped on me.
- I do not have bot accounts randomly messaging me
It’s better here and I don’t know why anyone would go anywhere else ..
Just right …
I’ve seen many a criticism at Mastodon , some of which is tech stack related and some of that even I disagree with. But there are some issues we as a community can address. Mastodon is still a social network and you need people communicating for that social part to be true. Try to take part in FollowFridays. Boost introduction posts more. Heck boost people’s posts more in general. It’s free! Promote members you like ! Mastodon is all of us and it will take all of us for it succeed !

How I instruct people to join Mastodon. First I don’t mention instance anything ! Secondly i provide them a link. Either Mstdn.social or my instance if they like gaming … tell them to follow the prompts to sign up. Give them a few suggestions to follow. And boom they are generally hooked ! Once they are familiar I mention instances I mention federated vs local. Once they’re comfortable they seem to grasp it way better.

Reintroduction Time !
I’m 25 % sea , 25 % weed , 25 % obscure media references and 25 % disappointment .
I post about video games , hockey (islanders) , cars and whatever any other pointless thoughts appear in my facsimile of a brain.
Tip: tell Mastodon what you want to see by following many accounts.
Follow if you DARE!
