🔍 We recently rolled out several improvements for search!

We now catch common misspellings and suggest alternative search terms for when there are no or very limited results.

Additionally, we now maintain a list of synonyms for search, so that "corona" also yields the results for "covid" - that means you can finally also search for "chat control" and find what you are looking for!

Federated worker and consumer coops in Venezuela. From its origins with more traditional boards of directors in separate organizations, it has evolved into a flat structure and makes use of assemblies for decision-making.

This is a very nice example of anarchy flourishing

After a brief hiatus our #OpenStreetMap interview series is back!

This time we spoke with Sofia Pahaoja of Touch Mapper, a website where you can create tactile maps for visually impaired people for free using OSM data

Open Source as a political ideal has always been that. While we have amazing OSS today, the dirty secret is as open as the source:

The money has to come from somewhere.

The time has to come from somewhere.

The effort has to come from somewhere.

And yes, these things are far, FAR more useful to the corps as a repository of free labor than they are as a political ideal or movement. If you've ever been inside an OSS foundation, you'll learn this in five minutes.

#ActivityPub could be a much better version of RSS if journalists and developers wanted it to be.

here's a demo of a web app updating post-commit (of course you wouldn't normally edit this by hand)

Attempts at some illustrations for the Foundation website. There is a reason why I avoided depicting people so far...

"For the purposes of human<->human communication, visual is clearly “better”. Most real engineering disciplines use diagrams, drawings, and blueprints for human-to-human communication. Many humans, especially non-programmers and non-language-analysts want “simplicity” and a layered approach to understanding the details of any system or dataset."

In-depth article by Linux Magazine on the Fediverse with interviews with Ivan and Mayel from @Bonfire and @cwebber

A good read to share

- About the Open Science Network, the archipielago set-up and the Jacobin.de case (all Bonfire)

- About the ActivityPub standard with federation between servers and client-server with the apps

- About living systems that are brought in by sensor networks about which the neighbours can have conversations.

- About solidarity networks. Such as @coopcloud – a community first and a set of
deployment tools and recipes second - of which Bonfire and also the #DemocraticTechFund are members

- Also about how #VentureCapital money typically results in shiny but extractive businesses that turn into an #enshittification process to return maximum profit to shareholders. Instead we can have networks of community centred ventures and cooperative platforms, such as @SocialCoop. And public funding channeled through e.g. @nlnet

It would be nice if we needn't refer to the implementation details at all, and use more or less natural and common language that relates to the activities we do together online. Wrote some thoughts in various comments on the other thread, like..

For a while back there I thought the best way to grow the #Fediverse was to get a few "celebrities" with 10 Million followers to join, and we could grow that way, but that's obviously a bad idea in hindsight.
We need to get 10 Million small communities, special niche interests, unique hobbies, philosophies, fan clubs to join us here.
If the nice celebrities want to join that's fine too.
