Trump has been Putin’s bitch for at least a decade. If you can’t or won’t see that, then you’re too stupid to be talking about foreign policy.

This must become a lesson for the whole world. This is what happens when you rely on the United States as a reliable partner.

Amused by my Google News alert for "new file format" bringing this important article to my attention: https://www.law.com/article/almID/52N5-TPB1-JBYY-24R8-00000-00/ (just 32 years too late!)

My dad has an iPhone 18 Pro Max. He's been using Apple's Braille Screen Input on it with great success. Then last night, it suddenly stopped working well for him, and he hasn't figured out what happened or how to fix it. He can type things like a full cell, dots 4-5-6, l, etc. but can't type real words on it. Anyone know what might have gone wrong? Please boost for reach. Thanks.

My mastodon instance of 1 user is getting hammered to its limits by AI scrapers.

Gigabytes of cached data and bandwidth for absolutely nothing.

Low disk space. Energy spikes. Memory spikes. CPU spikes. Human labor...

The cost is truly staggering, and this is for a single instance belonging to a single, otherwise insignificant individual.

Imagine the scale of resource abuse, theft, and climate destruction across the internet.

Just so people can use a shitty #AI prompt on their shitty site.

Martin Wolf on fire:

“In less than seven years, the global economy has been subjected to an exceptional sequence of events.” All but one of these shocks, the exception being the pandemic, are man-made — or perhaps “strongman-made.”

Six more Republican senators joined Democrats in calling on Trump to reverse his decision allowing Russian diesel back onto global markets. The bipartisan letter, signed by 12 senators, called the sanctions relief “a betrayal of the people of Ukraine” and “a gift to our adversary.” The lawmakers argued it would provide limited or no relief to Americans while helping finance Russia’s war, and said the administration had neither consulted Congress nor provided a legal justification. #Ukraine

I’ve seen this spin a few times. I’m all ok with disabled people being helped by “smart” glasses. Make them prescription. It’s as simple as that.

We need to talk about AI and math. Most of the breakthroughs this year are counterexamples found by brute search, not theorems built from insight, and understanding that helps us grasp the power and limits of transformer models.

a nice retrospective of the DL field, as represented in the corpus of 30 years of ECDL/TPDL proceedings. @webscidl.bsky.social@bsky.brid.gy is well represented!

This is indeed sad, but in view of how many people are strapped for money I would not be surprised if other conferences/meetings don't suffer the same end. Basically, if you aren't promoting AI (with generous funding from one or more AI companies) you are probably at risk. *sigh*
