No one wants a war, but buttering up the population to the seeming inevitability is always an important first step before starting or joining one.

A NIMBY village in Oxfordshire runs an independence referendum and it's treated as a bit of British fun.
A similar referendum in Birmingham or Manchester might not be received with the same whimsy, and the equivalent in Scotland, Wales or NI would be considered well beyond the Pale.
Sounds like Meta may be building a universal face database.
Why do I think this?
Well, because a Meta spokesperson has told WIRED,

Slow hand clap for #Linkedin who've locked me out of my account until I can prove who I am, except I can't because their third party face recog provider is unusable if you can't look directly at the camera - and all because I changed my password and disabled a bunch more of the personal data leaching settings I found when I went looking.
