Lots of very interesting discussions on this post. With the amount of fair criticisms against the Free Software/Open Source movement's approach, and where it has seemed to fail, I wonder if perhaps an explicitly new movement needs to "rise from the ashes", so to speak?
A Neo-FOSS or Post-FOSS movement, that takes far more into account than simply just the 4 Freedoms put forth by the FSF.
Some common points I observed in the replies:
- We need more focus on inclusion, accessibility, and kindness
- We need to think about the user, and accommodate *their* needs -- such as by focusing on UX and listening to user input.
- We need to get the creeps out of our movement. We don't work with fascists or rape apologists.
- We need to come to terms with the inherently anti-monopolistic/anti-capitalist (depending who you ask) aims of our movement. Accept the fact that our movement *is* political, and is a progressive movement!
So, the question is: Does this movement need to explicitly define itself as a new thing beyond just Free Software? Do we need a new, less problematic Richard Stallman and FSF to head the effort and write new theory? Or would it be better for this movement to simply continue operating as the modern day version of the same old "Free Software/Open Source movement"?
Once again, boosts encouraged :cyber_boost_request:
I'd love to hear y'all's thoughts on this!
