Replies seem to be split between "This shaver has been in my family for generations, my grandfather smuggled it out in his ass" and "I buy a new one every 6 weeks".

Making a list of the times when I would not want to "View full post". Yup. It's an empty list.

Well this is annoying in the new web interface. With the default font size (⌘0) it looks ok, but go up just one size (⌘+) and it does this "View full post" truncation crap:

Question for people who shave their faces with an electric shaver: do you have one that has lasted longer than a year?

Recently every one I buy stops taking a charge within 6 months to a year. I assume that all the manufacturers (Wahl, Philips, Braun, Remington, Panasonic, Amazon-allcaps-noname) are now the same cheap Chinese junk inside. Perhaps there is one that is not?

Ballot arrived today! So USPS has not yet been completely compromised... But I will still probably return it using a drop box rather than the mail.

I'm glad they do this:

From: California BallotTrax <updates@caballottrax.com>

This is a message from the California Secretary of State on behalf of San Francisco Department of Elections. Your ballot for the upcoming November 3, 2026, General Election has been mailed to you. If you haven't received your ballot within 7 business days, please contact us.

It's hard to explain Gavin Newsom to someone who hasn't seen The Dead Zone.

Recently getting dozens of follows a day from e.g. "chill girls who like bubble baths".

Dear Lazyweb,

1) Can someone please look at xscreensaver/configure.ac and explain to me what I need to do to get past "AM_GNU_GETTEXT not found in library" on e.g. Debian 13.5.

2) Can someone please rewrite xscreensaver/po/Makefile.* to not be complete garbage, because it's 20 years old, pure evil, and I have never understood it.

XScreenSaver 6.16 out now.

Four new hacks this time, two by me: floppy, graphstat, amigajuggler and polarnight.

There is no iOS version because Apple recently began rejecting App Store uploads that do not use the iOS 26 SDK. It is impossible to target that SDK with anything earlier than Xcode 26, which requires macOS 15 or 16. Since I am staying on macOS 14 for the foreseeable future, there will be no XScreenSaver iOS release for the foreseeable future.

My friends call it the big D.

Periodically, the "d" key on my keyboard stops working. Always and only "d". Power cycling the keyboard doesn't fix it. Plug the keyboard into a different computer: works fine over there. Rebooting the Mac fixes it. And I...

Periodic reminder that "Moderate Democrat" is how you spell "Republican" in San Francisco.

For historical reasons, it's impossible for a Republican to get elected in SF, so the Republicans register as Democrats and call themselves "moderates". What they actually are is "neoliberals", or, if you like, methane-breathing space zombie free-marketeers. The people to the left of them call themselves "progressives". And "centrist" means somewhere between Libertarian and MAGA...

Relatable Patent Art.

US12711711-B1: The illustrations in this patent are great, they read like a silent children's book about a smirking creeper.

Do Not Talk To Me About "AI"

I had some cards printed up.

These are unlikely to change any minds, but they will defintely shorten some incredibly tedious conversations at the bar.

Here's a PDF if you'd like some of your own.

TLDs used to mean things. We used to be a society.

I would love to hear the reason that all San Francisco government email addresses and services are advertised as being on the sfgov.org domain instead of the sf.gov domain.

I'll bet the reason is deeply, *deeply* stupid.

It has now been over two and a half years since Google has updated their aerial imagery of -- *checks notes* -- the sleepy seaside town of San Francisco. Still no QR for you.

I guess they've redirected that drone budget into feeding books into the plagiarism woodchipper.
